Pembina Territory

The Pembina Territory (pronounced PEM-bei-nuh) was a section of land covering part of the northern United States of America. It covers the Dakotas and Minnesota. Formerly a British colony part of Rupert's Land and the Hudson Bay Company from 1615 to 1818, when the US annexed the Red River valley of North Dakota (about one quarter of the present-day state) from the British and placed the boundary on the 49th parallel. The area became Pembina Territory, later in 1830 was incorporated into the Minnesota and Dakota territories.
