Pelynt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pelynt is a village and civil parish in south-east Cornwall, United Kingdom, situated about 20 miles west of Plymouth between Looe and Polperro. It has a population of around 1,124 (2001 census).

The parish of Pelynt existed at the time of the Domesday Book, when it was valued far higher than nearby Looe for tax.

Many members of the Trelawny family lived in the area, and are commemorated in the local church; Pelynt was the birthplace of Bishop Jonathan Trelawney.

The village has a school, founded in 1882, and a 16th-century inn, The Jubilee. There is an ancient barrow nearby.

[edit] Village post office

The first mention of a post office in Pelynt was in May 1852, when a type of postmark known as an undated circle was issued. Details of some of the people who have run the post office, including William Churchill (1856), Harriet Andrews (1910) and Samuel Harvey (from 1929) appeared in a book published in 1988.[1]
