[edit] History

Pela formed in 2004 in Brooklyn, after bandmates McCarthy and Sanderson met in the 7th Avenue, Park Slope subway station.[1] Both Sanderson and Martinez are classically trained.[1] They released a physical EP in 2005 and a download-only EP in 2006.[2] In 2007 the group signed with independent label Great Society, who released their debut full-length, Anytown Graffiti, in April 2007.[3] The group appeared at SXSW in 2007, and has played with The Decemberists, Norah Jones (El Madmo), Sleater-Kinney, The National, Mission of Burma, Rainer Maria, Gomez, The Flaming Lips, Devendra Barnhart,[4] British Sea Power, Feist, and Liam Finn. Christopher Herb joined the band in 2008. Pela have recently severed ties with Great Society and are unsigned at the moment.

On February 29th at Schubas Tavern in Chicago McCarthy sustained a serious hand injury after falling onto a broken pint glass on stage, leaving a deep gash in his left palm, and slicing a tendon in his left pinky finger. The tour was subsequently canceled as a result. McCarthy has since undergone a successful surgery and following physical therapy, has fully recovered. The band is currently on a national tour.
