Peggy Mount OBE, (2 May 1915 - 13 November 2001), born Margaret Rose Mount, was an English actress of stage and screen. She is perhaps best known for playing a battle-axe character, though her real personality was said to have been far removed from such a role.
Peggy Mount was born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Her love of acting had begun with the drama society of the Wesleyan chapel which she attended in Essex. She first worked as a secretary and took lessons from a drama tutor in her spare time. She progressed through amateur theatre and wartime concert party productions, many years in Rep and by the 1950s was appearing professionally in the West End of London.where she shot to fame playing Emma Hornett in "Sailor Beware!" having originated the role at Worting Rep. Later serious stage work include roles in Shakespeare productions and she also appeared in the film of the musical Oliver! and in Hotel Paradiso.
Peggy Mount is, however, best known for her numerous television comedy roles over three decades. Her first television role was the The Larkins in 1958. She followed this in 1966 with George and the Dragon, alongside Sid James and John le Mesurier. Between 1977 and 1981 she then starred in You’re Only Young Twice, as the forthright Flora Petty who bullied her friend Cissie Lupin (played by Pat Coombs).
Later television appearances included a role in the Doctor Who story The Greatest Show in the Galaxy in 1988.
She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995. In later years she lost her sight and had suffered a series of strokes, ending her days in Denville Hall, the Actors' home in North London.
