PEANUT CHEWS brand candies are manufactured by Just Born (which acquired the Goldenberg Candy Company brand). They consist of peanuts and caramel covered in chocolate, and are available in original dark chocolate flavor and milk chocolatey. The bars are small, and are similar in size to a "snack size" or Halloween size bar.
Many vegans are fond of the original flavor, which contain no milk or egg products, as would be typical of most chocolate and/or caramel [1]candies[1]
PEANUT CHEWS candies are manufactured in the USA.
[edit] History of the Brand
The PEANUT CHEWS brand celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2007. During this time, the candy has been produced solely in Philadelphia, PA.
1890 Goldenberg's Candy was founded by a Romanian immigrant, David Goldenberg. [2]
PEANUT CHEWS candies were first introduced in 1917. The candies were originally developed for use by the U.S. military as ration bar during World War II. The high energy, high protein recipe and unique taste made it popular with the troops.[3]
In 1921 Harry Goldenberg introduced the first wrapped PEANUT CHEWS candy for sale to consumers.[4]
In the 1930s the candy was converted from a full size bar to individual pieces.[5]
In 1949 Harry and Sylvia Goldenberg (2nd generation) purchased the Peanut Chews Division of D. Goldenberg, Inc. to focus solely on the production of PEANUT CHEWS candies.[6]
In 2003 Just Born, Inc., a family-owned candy company in Bethlehem, PA purchased the PEANUT CHEWS brand and the Northeast Philadelphia manufacturing facility.
In 2007 the PEANUT CHEWS brand became a proud sponsor of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team.
