Template talk:PD-font

On adding

This does not include images from raster fonts that have been converted to SVG, nor does it include bitmapped images of raster fonts

(see [1]), it doesn't seem clear to me. Aren't raster fonts already bitmapped? Also, if raster fonts have been converted to SVG, and the SVG font is copyrighted, is the raster font also copyrighted? My suggestion for the second part would be:

nor does it include bitmapped images of vectorized (SVG) fonts

which is different than the original suggestion, but makes more sense to me. Comments? --Iamunknown 04:51, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

This template screams ambiguity, something surprising regarding that it's a copyright template. This may not apply? Can someone provide me with a link that says so? hbdragon88 08:01, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

WP:PD#Fonts gives reasons (from the Code of Federal Regulations and two court cases) why bitmapped fonts are in the public domain in the United States; it doesn't address the copyright status of fonts under other jurisdictions. I would imagine in the U.K. that fonts of any kind would be given copyright protection (under the "sweat of the brow" principle) as in any other similar jurisdictions, but that is my totally uninformed opinion, and IANAL. --Iamunknown 18:50, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SVG

This template could apply to SVG images as long as the characters are broken into paths and the paths modified so that the original paths are not exactly followed. And hinting, of course, is entirely absent from SVG. - (), 15:51, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

No, an independent SVG rendering still wouldn't be public domain as the creator would be entitled to a copyright. If it were made without reference to the original scalable font description, it could be an independent copyright from the original, but it would still be a copyright. WP:PD#Fonts does not explain why an SVG rendering (which is not a "scalable font as such" or a computer program) is copyrighted. —Random832 21:39, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

The US courts decided that SVG files are computer programs, for the purposes of copyright law. Dragons flight (talk) 22:08, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, in that case. (Pun not intended. :-) - (), 08:01, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
