PCL Construction

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PCL family of companies is the largest general contracting organization in Canada and the eighth largest in the US. The organization is active in the commercial, institutional, multi-family residential, heavy industrial and civil construction sectors. The company's North American Headquarters and Centennial Learning Centre is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 2006, PCL opened its new Centennial Learning Centre, designed by the Canadian architectural firm Cohos Evamy, and built by PCL Construction Management Inc. (Edmonton).

PCL began operations in 1906 as E.E. Poole Contractors, founded by Ernest Poole of Stoughton, Saskatchewan. In 1913, Ernest Poole relocates the company to Regina and becomes Poole Construction Company Limited. In 1932, the company relocates to its current corporate headquarters in Edmonton. John and George Poole - Ernest's sons - purchase the company in 1948 and 29 years later in 1977 sell it to employees. In 1978, Poole Construction Company Limited becomes PCL Construction Limited.

PCL is made up of independent operating companies, which are wholly owned by PCL Employees Holdings, which, as its name suggests, is privately owned by its employees. At the conclusion of the fiscal year 2004, PCL's billings were in the range of $3.2 billion. The Toronto district is PCL's largest, currently employing over 350 people. The Toronto district has built many of PCL's signature projects such as Brookfield Place and Scotia Plaza.

In 2007, PCL was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers, as published in Maclean's magazine, the only construction firm to receive this honour.[1]
