Pazhanji Church The Church known as "Pazhanji Palli" is situated at Pazhanji near Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district of Kerala state, south India. It has historical importance and is a part of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
The church is very old and said to have been constructed by believers who fled from Thirukochi. Later on they settled here forever and constructed the church. It is how the name "Pazhanji" [similar to the malayalam word for "old"] came into being for the place.
The church is a few hundred years old, and the walls have paintings along with craft works on the walls. A new church is being constructed under the vicarship of Rev. Fr. Sunny Chacko leaving the Pazhanji unchanged. It will be the biggest one of its kind when it is complete.
Also the "Pazhanji Perunnal" is very famous and all the people who have migrated to remote places for their livelihood will be back to join the two-day function in the church[citation needed].
People from the neighbouring countryside and surrounding churches congregate in memory of a Christian Bishop who came to Kerala from Syria[citation needed]. St. Mary’s Church Feast is an occasion spread over October 2nd and 3rd. It is marked by music and festivities and a colourful procession in which more than 40 caparisoned elephants participate.
It is very famous for the colourful processions with elephants, bandsets, chendamelam, shinkarimelam, and fireworks.
The "Kodiyum Kurisum" and the "Nercha Oonu" is another part of the ceremony[citation needed].
The celebration draws tourists and locals.
