Payyal falls under the Nedungapra Post office area of Ernakulam District. A small place 10 kilometers away from Perumbavoor towards Kothamangalam via Kottappady. A very picteresque place with lots of lush greenery. Thick green rice fields and coconut plantations are the main attractions of Payyal.

[edit] Economy and Lifestyle
Traditionally Payyal used to be one of the important spice trading place in Ernakulam District. Payyal had many retail spice merchants who used to buy the crops from farmers in and around Payyal, and eventually supplied them to the main stream exporters in Kochi. As the time passed Payyal lost its trading glory as the merchants and trade unions couldn't reach in an agreement on some potential issues related to their business. Payyal currently is predominantly an agricultural place. Several commodities like rubber, pepper, ginger, turmeric, plantain, vegetables, coconut, cocoa, and rice are being cultivated here.
People live in independent homes and mainly use private or public transportation. Private bus services run almost half hour based into several neighboring towns. Auto rickshaws are commonly used for small distances. Most of household have bikes (70%) and many have cars (20%).[citation needed]
Padma movie theatre in Payyal used to serve the entertainment needs of the people of Payyal though it gave in its glory to the TV boom lately.

St. Antoney's Upper Primary School is the only educational institution currently in Payyal. High schools and Colleges are in abundances in cities which are easily commutable from Payyal. Most of the people under 30 years have at least college degree.[citation needed]

Traditionally people in Payyal were predominantly depending on Nambialil Ayurvedic Nursing home for their health care needs. This nursing home is still offering health care to the locals even though there are many modern hospitals in close by cities. Recently the local panchayat had opened a government ayurvedic clinic too in Payyal.

People in payyal follows either Hindu or Christian religion. Followers of both the religions live in close cooperation and harmony. Devi temple in Panichayam and St. Antoney's Church in Nedungapra are the important places of worship for the people of Payyal. Religious tolerance in Payyal is so high that the religious differences are not at all felt in the daily lives of the people. SNDP Union has a shakha in Payyal, playing its role in promoting religious tolerance.
