Paweł Kubisz

Paweł Kubisz (12 May 1907 – 19 August 1968) was a Polish journalist, columnist, poet and activist.

Kubisz was born to a poor family in the village of Końska, Austria-Hungary. He attended pedagogic schools in Cieszyn and Ostrzeszów but didn't finish either. As a poet he was active mostly in the interwar period. In 1927 he was arrested by the Czech authorities and sentenced to 13 months in jail for circulating Slovak irredentist literature. After his release, Kubisz worked as a correspondent and went to Lithuania and later Latvia. During World War II he was twice jailed by the Gestapo. After the war, Kubisz was awarded a State Literary Award (Państwowa Nagroda Literacka) by the Polish government in exile. Kubisz was an active organizer of Polish literary and community life in Zaolzie in the late 1940s and 1950s. He was one of the co-founders of PZKO (The Polish Cultural and Educational Union) and the first editor-in-chief of Zwrot magazine. In 1958 he was fired from his position as editor-in-chief of Zwrot and expelled from PZKO and from public life. He was accused by the Communists of a "nationalist and individualist stance". At the time of his death in Český Těšín, Czechoslovakia, he was a worker at the Třinec Iron and Steel Works.

Kubisz's poetry can be characterized as left-wing, concerned mainly with the situation of the poor people and workers of Cieszyn Silesia. Kubisz was rebelious in nature, always in conflict with someone. His rebelious nature can be seen in his writings, where he calls for social and national revolution.
