Paus

Paus (alternate spellings: Pauss and de Paus) is one of the oldest and most distinguished families of Norway, and can be traced back to the late 15th century. Members of the family have been priests since the end of the Middle Ages, and the family claims descent from mediaeval Norwegian nobility. A Catholic member of the family was ennobled by the Pope and made a Roman Count.

Other members have been judges, officers, ambassadors, doctors, members of parliament, bankers, ship-owners, theologians and artists.

Famous descendants of the Paus family include playwright Henrik Ibsen, whose maternal grandmother was a Paus and whose father also was raised by a member of the Paus family.
