Paulus Pontius

Paulus Pontius (1603 - 1658) was a well known Flemish engraver.
Paulus Pontius, also known as Paul Pontius, was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He trained as a painter prior to studying engraving but by the time he was 24 he had become a master in the Antwerp guild and was the primary artist responsible for making engravings after the work of Peter Paul Rubens. Pontius lived in Reubens's home until a year after the painter's death. After Reubens's death Pontius continued to make engravings of other artists' work including the work of Anthony van Dyck, Titan and Velazquez. Pontius was also well known for his portraiture. His works are widely collected and feature in numerous museum, library and archive collections around the world. He died in 1658 at Antwerp, Belgium.
