</gallery>==Life and career== Born in São Paulo and raised in suburban Ribeirão Pires,[1] Szot began his musical education with piano lessons at the age of five and later added violin and classical ballet.[2] He originally intended to pursue a career as a dancer, but when he sustained a knee injury at the age of 21 he turned to singing instead. [3]
Szot studied at University Jagiellonski in Poland, from where his parents had emigrated following World War II.[4] He made his professional debut in a production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Municipal in Sao Paulo in 1997.
Since then, he has performed with the New York City Opera, the Palm Beach Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Teatro Liceu de Barcelona, Opera de Bordeaux, Opera de Marseille, Opéra de Nice, and Vlaamse Opera, among others, in such operas as L'Elisir d'Amore, La bohème, Don Giovanni, Cavalleria rusticana, I Pagliacci, Carmen, Cosi fan Tutte, and Le Nozze di Figaro, Maria Golovin. [5]
Of his performance in South Pacific, Ben Brantley of the New York Times said, "When he delivers "Some Enchanted Evening" or "This Nearly Was Mine," it’s not as a swoon-making blockbuster (though of course it is), but as a measured and honest consideration of love." [6] Szot has won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, and the Theatre World Award and has been nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance.
