Paul Winter Consort is an American musical group led by the soprano saxophonist Paul Winter. Founded in 1967, the group mixes elements of classical music, jazz, and world musics, as well as the sounds of animals and nature. Current members also include percussionist Glen Velez and pianist Paul Halley, and former members include woodwind player Paul McCandless, percussionist Guilherme Franco and guitarists Ralph Towner and Jim Scott, bassist Glen Moore and sitarist Collin Walcott. Former Consort members McCandless, Towner, Moore, and Walcott left to form Oregon.
The Consort recorded an album on location in the Grand Canyon and gives annual winter and summer solstice concerts at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. The Annual Winter Solstice Celebration dates from 1980 and has been broadcast since 1988 on National Public Radio.[1]
Composer, musician, environmentalist and pacifist for creating music that celebrates the sacredness of life and for his support of the arts. He was awarded the Courage of Conscience Award by the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, MA on October 26th 1991. [2]
