He replaced Hugh Cornwell in 1990, appeared on and co-wrote The Stranglers studio albums Stranglers In the Night, About Time, Written in Red, Coup de Grace 2004's Norfolk Coast and 2007's Suite XVI.

Paul is an avid fund-raiser for a prostate cancer charity.
In December 2005, he was involved in a dramatic car crash in which his car was thrown into the air and landed upside down - he escaped unharmed.
Paul left The Stranglers after almost 16 years (believed to be longer than his predecessor, according to press quotes from his former colleagues) in May 2006.
"Paul Roberts, former lead singer with The Stranglers takes over the role of Mephistopheles Smith for the remainder of the 2007 Cloven Hooves Tour. One of music's most charismatic charmers, Paul brings Richard O'Brien's devil to life in his own unique style."
Paul will soon start rehearsals with Groundlings Theatre Company in Southsea where he will be playing the role of Pop Larkin in the world premiere of "The Darling Buds of May-Perfick." This is a musical based on the work or H.E Bates and written by David Burton, formerly a member of the cast of Only Fools & Horses. The show will run for a week in April 2008 at The Kings Theatre, Southsea Albert Road, Southsea as a trial to see if the company can raise enough interest to finance a West End production.
