Paul R. Wharton High School opened on August 21, 1997. Wharton High School is located in New Tampa, Florida on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Wharton is one of 24 high schools in the Hillsborough County Public Schools system.

  • The facility was dedicated to Mr. Paul R. Wharton, who served the Hillsborough County School System for 38 years.
  • The school mascot is the Wildcat.
  • Mitchell Muley Served as Wharton's first Principal from 1997 - 2002
  • George Gaffney served as the second principal from 2002-2007
  • The current principal is Scott Fritz
  • School colors are navy blue, white and black.
  • School rivals are the Freedom High Patriots
  • School newspaper is the Predator
  • School yearbook is Felidae

  • The football program is affiliated with the 5A class.
  • In the year 2002-2003 the Wharton football team finished as state runners up in the 5A class after losing to Pompano Beach Ely *22-10. During that school year, Larry Edwards led the Wharton Wildcats and ended up getting a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

Candice Dupree was the first wildcat basketball player to reach the 1,000 point career milestone. She attended Temple Uniersity and was later drafted by the Chicago Sky where she later became a WNBA allstar in 2006.

In 2008, the boys soccer team won the first Wharton state championship for a team sport in the brief history of the school. Wharton defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 to win the state championship.

[edit] Tennis

In 2008 the wildcats boys tennis team gave the school their second team state title in one year, the team finished undefeated, never losing a match.
