Hipp made his British stage debut in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story in the titular role, on 12 October 1989 at the Victoria Palace theatre in London's West End, for which he earned a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Musical. The following year, he opened in Buddy at Broadway's Shubert Theater in New York; he was nominated for a Tony Award and won The Theater World Award for Best Broadway Debut.[2] He returned to the London stage in 1993 for a short-lived 25th anniversary revival of Hair at the Old Vic, in the role of Berger. That production also starred John Barrowman.
