Paudie Fitzmaurice is a successful hurler from Killeedy in County Limerick, Ireland who featured prominently in Limerick hurling during the 1970's. Fitzmaurice was part of the renowned team of 1973[1] (when Limerick won the All-Ireland[2]), 1974, 1980 and 1981, including a stint as captain when he led Limerick to success in the Munster Senior Hurling Final in 1981[3]. He is a two-time National League winner[4], and finished as top scorer when captaining Limerick to victory in the Fitzgibbon Cup in 1974[5][6]. His achievements as a player were recognised in 1984 when Fitzmaurice received an All-Star award[7]. Fitzmaurice continued to play competitive hurling for his native Killeedy until 1996[8].

Fitzmaurice was named manager of the Sligo hurling team in January of 2003[9], but resigned after harsh criticism in May of that year[10][11].

[edit] Teaching

Fitzmaurice has a degree in Quantum Mechanics from Trinity College Dublin[citation needed], and currently teaches maths at Castletroy College in Limerick[12]. Before that, he served as Institute Chaplain at Limerick Institute of Technology[13].

[edit] Hurling Style

Paudie and his brother Willie were noted for their unusual hurling technique. When striking the sliotar, the Fitzmaurice brothers did not bend their elbows. This made it difficult for the players of opposing teams to hook them.[14] [15]
