[edit] en dashes

WRT to your recent edit of the Dashes pages, will you please take a look at the comment against retaining the preference for hyphens in titles, and provide a rejoinder? Tony 08:44, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

My edit only fixed a broken sentence. Anyway, thanks for letting me know there is a discussion on the issue.--Patrick 09:20, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Finite

Hi Patrick. I disagree with this edit you made. Of course an object is not a number. But do you ever say a "finite object" meaning an object of finite diameter, or do you say "finite set" meaning an object of finite measure? Because, if not, you are not talking about the object being finite, but about its diameter or measure being finite, which is indeed a number. Thanks, you can reply here. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 03:00, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

For example Hilbert's paradox of the Grand Hotel mentions a finite object. Even though bounded is formally a better word, mentioning something on this on the page finite seems useful.--Patrick 08:00, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
The term "(in)finite hotel" is used in a very informal way in the Hilbert's paradox of the Grand Hotel article, and the way it is used there is clear from the context (number of rooms). I don't that is general usage.
One should find better reasons for including things, rather than what you did for sequence when you added the fact that "finite sequence is the same as sequence with a finite number of terms" based on some sloppy writing of some previous editor at sequence space.
Are you saying that when you opposed clearing up that inconsistency you had not even followed my link to sequence space?--Patrick 23:32, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
As otherwise it is just too easy to add misinformation and confusion to articles. I'll cut out the mention to "finite object" meaning "object of finite diameter" at finite unless you can come up with references for that usage (and not just some obscure website). That per Wikipedia:Citing sources. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
See e.g. universe: it discusses whether the (theoretical) universe is finite or infinite.--Patrick 23:32, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough, the word "finite" has an informal meaning too. But then its definition should be informal also. I replaced "finite diameter" and "finite measure" with "finite size". Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 02:55, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:PD-PCL question

Howdy, I noticed you created the above template and I was wondering if you could answer a question about it's application. I'd like to use some of the state maps from the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection and add references (or shading) to the various American Viticultural Area in those states. The FAQ linked in the templates says that we may "use them as you wish" so I'm assuming that we can alter them with due credit and link to the original map. You template doesn't have any reference to a map being altered so I'm wondering what additional tagging that I may need to add to the maps that I upload. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. AgneCheese/Wine 07:42, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

It seems from commons:Template:PD-PCL that we should not use this template anymore anyway, and refer to the original source instead. If you are going to upload the image to Commons (which is preferable) you can best ask there, I am not an expert. Perhaps you need separate tags for the original and the change, where the latter could be commons:Template:PD-self.--Patrick 08:47, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rigid body

Hi Patrick. It appears that you wrote most of this article, and there is good info in there. I have a suggestion though. Do you think the article could be made more acessible? The concept of rigid body is rather elementary, but the first section in the article starts with configuration spaces, which is rather technical math. Any ideas of how to simplify at least the first half of the article? Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 03:49, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

The first two sentences of section one (the section after the lead section) could be moved down; in section one we can put in that place a simpler sentence about combinations of translations and rotations. What follows is more elementary, just vectors and matrices.--Patrick 07:06, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
I have done that.--Patrick 07:44, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, it looks much better now!
And I have a question about the notation in the kinematics section. Does one need to write \mathbf{r}(t,\mathbf{r}_0) there or is it enough to write \mathbf{r}(t), so dropping the \mathbf{r}_0 (also note that now both the notation with r_0 and the one without r_0 is present). Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 14:45, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
The notation was a bit sloppy, I fixed it. Since some quantities depend on \mathbf{r}_0 and some do not, it seems good to mention this dependence when applicable. The motion of a rigid body is about the position etc. as function of the two variables.--Patrick 23:07, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 03:02, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Death Proof

The 120 version of Death Proof was released separately from the Grindhouse double feature. As the information that an extended version was created is already in the body of the article, it doesn't need to be mentioned in the infobox. (Ibaranoff24 13:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC))

It is much too US-centered to consider non-US info too minor to put in the infobox. Please revert your deletions.--Patrick 14:10, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
The article is about Grindhouse as a double feature, not Grindhouse as seperate films. In the future, please reply to my talk page rather than your talk page so I can get back to you sooner. (Ibaranoff24 21:11, 21 June 2007 (UTC))
When did I delete info? The info was still in the article, it just wasn't in the infobox. There's a difference! I put in a footnote on the runtimes of the individual films that includes the runtime of the extended version of Death Proof. What was wrong with that? (Ibaranoff24 14:32, 22 June 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Transformers

Because it's a comic book and novel that serves the story of the film. It isn't just a film: this whole new fictional universe is a major push on Hasbro's part to reinvigorate a franchise. Alientraveller 13:36, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Non-free use disputed for Image:TramStop.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:TramStop.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:43, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sorting

I just turned to you for a little help. I saw you have added Class=sortable to Tabu's filmography table. I did the same in the Preity Zinta page, cause I found it as a good idea. Now I changed the filmography style of Zinta, and the Class=sortable doesn't work properly. Could you help me please? Thanks, --ShahidTalk2me 10:29, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

See m:Help:Sorting#Limitations.--Patrick 10:36, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. So I can't display it on this king of table? --ShahidTalk2me 10:50, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't know what you mean by "king of table". For tables for which sorting makes sense I recommend that cells extending over multiple rows and/or columns are avoided, so that sorting is possible.Patrick 11:02, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
My bad... I meant "kind" --ShahidTalk2me 12:55, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deceased (disambiguation)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Deceased (disambiguation), by Salaskan (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Deceased (disambiguation) fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

now unnecessary, this dabpage contains only two entries. An appropriate hatnote has been added at death (deceased redirects to that page)

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Deceased (disambiguation), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:23, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shortcut templates

I'm not sure this is such a good idea. Why are you replacing shortcuts with templates? Just expand the shortcut to the full link. --- RockMFR 18:23, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

The full link is fine, but if somebody does not want to type or copy the full name, a template is a solution to keep it readable. Also on talk pages.--Patrick 23:39, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fire sale

I inserted mention of the fire sale in the Plot section and piped the link to the explanation on the Wikipedia article. Hope that works. I did consider the "see also" template to be out of place. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 17:52, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TfD nomination of Template:Cod

[edit] Subst help on furvg template

Hi Patrick. Thanks for coming to help on User:KieferSkunk/furvg with the subst issue. Unfortunately, I already tried most of that solution, and it didn't work. :/ Unless I'm missing something in how the template is used. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:02, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

You have to add "subst=subst:" in the test call. Also, Template:Non-free use rationale should be adapted.--Patrick 23:43, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Excellent! Now it's working! :) I fixed a couple bugs, including leaving the outer "Non-free use rationale" template intact as a template (since that's what the bots are expecting). I've updated the documentation and the examples, and it appears to be working perfectly, given the extra "subst=subst:" parameter in the call. Thank you very much! :) — KieferSkunk (talk) — 01:36, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect of WP:IM

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on WP:IM, by GrooveDog (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. [edit] Template:Age in years and days

To: User talk:Patrick. Hello. I have three quick questions for you, please. Thanks. On the following page, Template talk:Age in years and days, you indicated that you added some documentation at Template:Age/doc about wrong input. Question 1: Do you agree or disagree that similar documentation should likewise be added to the following page: Template:Age in years and days ...? Question 2: If you do agree, are you yourself able to edit that page in order to add such documentation ... or who is? Question 3: I noticed that the following page is protected from being edited: Template:Age in years and days ... but the following page is not protected from being edited: Template:Age/doc. Do you know why that is ... and what is the distinction? Thank you. Please reply on my Talk Page.(Joseph A. Spadaro 20:24, 13 August 2007 (UTC))

(1)Agree.
(2)/(3) One of the advantages of transcluded doc pages is that, while keeping the template code protected, people can edit the documentation. I moved the documentation to Template:Age in years and days/doc, so you can make the desired edits.
Patrick 22:19, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for your prompt reply. I went into the following two pages (see below) and made several edits. Most of the edits were cosmetic / aesthetic changes in formatting. Some of the edits, however, were substantive. When you have a moment, can you please take a look at both pages and let me know if everything looks fine ... or if you see the need for any further changes. Thanks a lot. Please reply on my Talk Page. The two pages are: Template:Age/doc ... and ... Template:Age in years and days/doc. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro 22:19, 14 August 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Mon fils à moi

I removed the image link at Mon fils à moi because it's unnecessary to have a link like that, plus the proper way would be to place an image in the infobox. However I haven't found that image on a site with which would be appropriate to upload from. If you know of one however, that'd be great. -WarthogDemon 18:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Without an uploaded image the next best thing is a link, for the meantime.--Patrick 00:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help with #switch function

Hi,

I have seen that you are active on meta:Help talk:ParserFunctions and so am requesting some help in implementing a #switch function.

Is it possible to set a colspan function inside a #switch? I'm am trying to enable a switch here (part of an infobox). I'm am attempting to make it so that one can choose the number of columns, (from 1 to all 4). At the moment, the switch works insofar as it will display the required columns, but I'd like them to expand to fill the gap left by the other two. I would also like the column widths to be the same.

I have no idea if this is making any sense, or whether you are able to help, but can the colspan="x" and/or width="x" functions work within a switch? I have realised that the pipe character doesn't work (so have used html) and I think the = sign is throwing things a bit. In the same manner, I don't seem to be able to set background colours etc within the switch.

Sorry for twittering on and cluttering your talk page, but any help would be gratefully received.

MDCollins (talk) 12:49, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

If the default result has an equal sign, you have to use "#default=". For the rest you just should not use "|", except in a template, parser function, parameter with default, link, or image tag. I think everything else is allowed.--Patrick 13:18, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ten Canoes

Thanks for your additions to Ten Canoes. You appear to know the film well. Are you able to tidy up the later section, about its awards and so on? THe current material is out of date. If you could add references, that would be great. BrainyBabe 09:35, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't know much about the awards, but perhaps Rolf_de_Heer#Ten_Canoes helps.--Patrick 10:03, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Template talk:Infobox musical artist#Background field addition I am aware that there are several instances of this template being transcluded but without anything in the "background" field. So I have an idea, could you look at this please? FMAFan1990 06:23, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, you can use {{#if:{{{background|}}}||[[Category:..]]}}, if that is what you are asking.--Patrick 06:58, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Right now, I am discussing this with other users, and also I can't edit the template since it is protected and I am not an admin. FMAFan1990 04:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Change to infobox musical artist

Hi, I'm puzzled by your recent change to {{infobox musical artist}}. It seems like it will add the name of the image to the table-row tag as if it were an attribute (except, of course, it's unlikely to have an equal sign (=) like a proper attribute), unless the undocumented "image class" template argument is set (unlikely since it's undocumented), in which case the contents of that will be used as if it were an attribute (not as a class unless the template argument happens to start with "class="). Basically, I'm just very puzzled as to what this is intended to accomplish, especially since it was done without any discussion. Xtifr tälk 12:03, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Never mind, I figured it out. Two curly braces, not three, so "image class" is a template not an argument. Duh. Sorry. :) Xtifr tälk 12:15, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "One can still put a link in a headline, but in that case one should not use the section adding feature, but apply the section editing feature to the previous section"

I don't understand what you mean. --Dweller 13:43, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

We are talking about a bug in one method of making an edit (clicking the "+"). You can still make the desired edit in another way, apply the section editing feature to the previous section and add the new section at the bottom of it.--Patrick 13:46, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Arrrr I still don't understand what you're saying, but it seems irrelevant now, as the bug message has gone. Thanks anyway. --Dweller 13:53, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion proposal for Threat

Hello Patrick- I'm not an expert on the procedure for deletion proposals, but I don't believe you are meant to simply undo the addition of the notification template if you disagree with the proposal. I have restored it. I think we should wait to see what others think. -Eric (talk) 15:28, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

See the distinction at Wikipedia:Deletion_policy between the sections Proposed deletion and Deletion discussion. You used the first, perhaps you want to use the second.--Patrick 15:50, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip, Patrick. I re-read those sections and changed the deletion proposal template to an AfD one. -Eric (talk) 19:20, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Apparently the user I accused of malicious intent in moving that page is eight years old, and edits the Dutch Wikipedia with special mentors. Strange things. User:Krator (t c) 00:35, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I know. It is not particularly relevant in this matter, though.--Patrick 00:42, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Row1

A tag has been placed on Row1, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. B1atv 09:12, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] In love

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article In love, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. B1atv 15:05, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor

Hi Patrick, I've removed the reference added that was to a blog, (blogs aren't generally considered reliable sources), but there is plenty of news coverage about the issues of Ramadan and prayer in space for Shukor, so I've simply replaced the blog ref with the refs already existing in the article that discuss the details. Hope that helps clear it up! Cheers, ArielGold 07:14, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

On the other hand, a translation is more interesting than just a summary.--Patrick 07:22, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
True, I just thought in this case, for the non-muslim, a summary was just as interesting. Most non-muslims would not really grasp the translation's intent or meaning, and the newspapers seem to have done a quite thorough job at finding a balance between both. If you'd like to add the title of the guideline, feel free, I just (being non-muslim) found it confusing, and thought it easier to understand in summary form. I hope you know I wasn't criticizing you in any way, but just editing for readers unfamiliar with the issue. :o) Cheers, ArielGold 07:34, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kingdom of the Netherlands

As you may have noticed I'm cleaning up and improving the article about the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the moment. I saw that you restored the section in Demographics that was about the demographics of the individual islands withing the Netherlands Antilles. I deleted that section because it is:

a) of no relevance for the Kingdom article as it specifies how many people live within the 5 individual island areas of the Netherlands Antilles, and as such should be mentioned in Netherlands Antilles, and not in the article about the Kingdom. We don't list the number of people living in the 12 Dutch provinces there either.

It is more convenient to have these data together. If you like you can add the number of people living in the 12 Dutch provinces, but that is less needed, because geographically they are more a unity than the islands. Also, in view of the changes in status of islands the separate figures become even more relevant.--Patrick 22:53, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
That is true, but the data is also incorrect. I'll try and find some correct data on this. I hope you don't mind that I delete the reference to the currency used in the different constituent countries, as that has nothing to do with Demographics. I'll see if I can find a place where it is relevant. Maarten 22:58, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
See Talk:Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands#Move_some_data_from_infobox_to_table.3F.--Patrick 23:00, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

b) that section was not wikified and written in a bad way, so restoring it degrades the quality of the article again, where I was trying to give the article an upgrade.

I'm looking forward to your opinion on this. Kind Regards, Maarten 22:42, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Please stop frustrating my efforts to improve the article. The Kingdom Government consists of the Crown and the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom. The latter consists of the Dutch Council of Ministers + 1 Minister Plenipotentiary from the NA and 1 from Aruba. The PM of Aruba and/or the Neth. Ant. do NOT take part in the Kingdom Government. I wrote that in my summary. I don't see why you reverted my edit. Maarten 23:02, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
That is no reason to remove an overview of prime ministers of the three countries.--Patrick 23:05, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
The article is not an overview of three constituent countries, it is about the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its government, that's why it has a country infobox. As said earlier, the Prime Minister of Aruba and/or the Netherlands Antilles do NOT take part in the Kingdom Government, so why list them in the infobox as "leaders"??? They are listed as PMs on Aruba and Netherlands Antilles. Maarten 23:14, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
They do not have to be put in the infobox, they can be put somewhere else in the article. The principle of an overview is that the info is shown together, not only in three separate articles.--Patrick 23:21, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Did you read what I just wrote? "The article is NOT an OVERVIEW of three constituent countries, it is about the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its government". We do not list the 50 governors of the different states in the United States article, do we? Maarten 23:29, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

I do not agree. It should contain various overviews: info shown together, even though that info is also dividedly available on separate pages.--Patrick 23:38, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
But definately not in the infobox. I have nothing against the name of the Aruban and NA PM put in the article and you are free to do that, but the infobox should list the government of the Kingdom, not of the individual states. It would look strange to you too (I hope!) if the United States article infobox would list the 50 governors, but not President George Bush (note that the previous version only mentioned Jan Peter Balkenende as the PM of the Netherlands, and not as Chair of the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom!). We could mention the Ministers Plenipotentiary though... Maarten 00:09, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I added a new table to the article, with the islands of the NA, and I mentioned the current governors and PMs of Aruba and the NA in the "Constituent nations" section. Also mentioned the use of the different currencies there. Hope you like it. Please don't revert again. Maarten 02:44, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that is fine, thanks. Now let us restore the Dutch terms [1], it is not like giving translations in arbitrary languages, Dutch is the main language spoken in the Kingdom. If you like we can use footnotes.--Patrick 07:23, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Ftl, Sqr and Template:Hist

Hi, I just noticed that some templates you created, Template:Ftl, Template:Sqr and Template:Hist, are unused and appear to be abandoned. I've marked them as deprecated, meaning they'll be deleted in two weeks' time if nobody objects. If there's a reason to keep them please leave a note at Wikipedia talk:Deprecated and orphaned templates. Thanks. Bryan Derksen 02:29, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Octahedral symmetry

Hello,

There is an interesting relation here to Riemann surfaces. The most symmetric Riemann surface of genus 2, namely the Bolza surface, admits 48 automorphisms and its automorphism group is closely related to the octahedron. If you think it may be worth adding a link, I can try to elaborate on this at that page. Katzmik 16:55, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, please do, that sounds interesting.--Patrick 23:41, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:PMediaWiki talk

Hi, I just noticed that a template you created, Template:PMediaWiki talk, is unused and appears to be abandoned. I've marked it as deprecated, meaning it'll be deleted in two weeks' time if nobody objects. If there's a reason to keep it please leave a note at Wikipedia talk:Deprecated and orphaned templates and feel free to remove the {{deprecated}} tag from the template. Thanks. Bryan Derksen 09:06, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Also just came across Template:PUser talk, with the same situation. Is there one of these for each namespace? Bryan Derksen 09:18, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

They were for a branching technique before we had ParserFunctions, see m:Help:Array_(older_methods)#An_array_method_using_an_auxiliary_template_for_each_value_of_the_index_used. I deleted the ones I found which I made. There are still some with P and a number, e.g. Template:P100, by other editors.--Patrick 10:42, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Beam riding

Thanks for your input on the MANPADS page. Regarding "beam riding", that terminology comes directly from the congressional report, updated in 2006, and since that section references that source, shouldn't we leave it as the source describes it? AKRadeckiSpeaketh 16:17, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ME/CVS Vereniging

In view of your many contributions to Netherlands, please consider the following. ME/CVS Vereniging (ME/CFS Association) is one of the three patient organizations for Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis and post-viral fatigue syndrome in the Netherlands. The deleted article now is at deletion review. The references are in a foreign language and an issue at DRV is whether there was enough reference material independent of ME/CVS Vereniging's control or anyone associated with ME/CVS Vereniging to create a Wikipedia article. Please consider participating in that DRV to assist in determining whether the references are independent from ME/CVS Vereniging or in some way connected to ME/CVS Vereniging. -- Jreferee t/c 17:03, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Documentation

I don't understand what you're trying to fix. It worked fine before for the case I pointed to (WP:SONG#Infobox), and it now uses excessive whitespace for such cases. You haven't shown any examples of cases that your change fixes. Perhaps there is a solution that works for all cases, but I can't tell since I don't know what problem you're trying to solve. Substing is not a good solution. --PEJL 16:02, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

It is in the edit summaries:
  • transclude the doc page if it exists only, use edit link otherwise, because that gives preload
  • newline is needed for the case that the documentation starts with a section
--Patrick 01:31, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

{{Documentation subpage}} edited to fix the WP:SONG#Infobox extra line. The rationale is here. – Conrad T. Pino 08:14, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merge from Template:Template doc

{{Documentation}} and {{Template doc}} are both highly visible template systems. Errors during their merge are potentially widely disruptive. I write you as an active {{Documentation}} editor and merge supporter. Given this is my first big merger I ask how do these things get organized (if at all) and finally done? To mitigate errors I'm trying attract review participation by proposing work and reporting progress for this merge here. Is this much talk appropriate or over done for a merge process like this one? TIA – Conrad T. Pino 09:04, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

It looks like we can just redirect {{Template doc}} to {{Documentation}}.--Patrick 10:01, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Not that simple but not bad either:

{{Template doc}} transcludes {{Template doc inline}} transcludes {{/doc}} which may or may NOT transclude {{Template doc page}} or {{Template doc page transcluded}} for "This documentation is transcluded from..." display.
whereas
{{Documentation}} generates "...transcluded from..." by default and {{Documentation subpage}} never does.
The solution is sandboxed and tested and now I need permission to implement it.

Right now I need admin supoort to lower the protection level on Template:Template doc (backlinks, edit) and Template:Template doc inline (backlinks, edit) from {{pp-template}} to just {{pp-semi-template}}. – Conrad T. Pino 03:21, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

So we have to:

Is that right?--Patrick 08:47, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

No, it's more complicated than just redirection.
I'll document the plan and notify you when done. Thank you! – Conrad T. Pino 18:49, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

The project's not neglected. User:MZMcBride was available for support and I continued the work. I've asked User:MZMcBride and now solicit you for Merge into template protection and Merge from template protection. When convenient please implement Merging Level protection. I've noted the Current Level protection for your convenience. Thank you. – Conrad T. Pino 03:54, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Done [2]. That was the only one still requested, it seems.--Patrick 08:15, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] American Gangster

Considering you've seen the film, can you not expand the Plot section to the appropriate length per WP:MOSFILMS in one fell swoop? I've never seen this so-called "gradual" trend -- it's either small, then goes to the right size, or gets too large, and needs to be trimmed back down. There isn't progressive growth, and such a section is too minimal that reader may not be aware that you're spoiling it until it's too late. I highly suggest adding on to the section. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 02:21, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Just like with other (sections of) articles, growth is very often gradual. "Plot" means it contains spoilers.--Patrick 02:26, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
What I'm saying is that it's as short as a Premise section, so with not enough content in it, a reader may read it before catching him or herself, as opposed to an obviously significant body of text for the Plot. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 03:26, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I would not mind a spoiler warning, but see also Wikipedia:Spoiler. Some all-or-nothing policy as alternative for spoiler warnings does not seem suitable.--Patrick 09:16, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I was involved in the discussion about the IMDB template over at Template_talk:Infobox_actor#IMDB_link_in_infobox.3F. The comments by the last few users (Garion96, Kbthompson, Rossrs, Melty girl, and myself) are in support of the removal of the IMDB link from the infobox. I don't know if this is a strong enough consensus comment to remove it, but it is a stronger consensus than there ever was to add it in the first place. Would you mind commenting on this issue further or taking action in removing the IMDB link from the infobox? The discussion seems to have otherwise died down and the last user to oppose its removal, User:linca, has not replied in over 10 days. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 20:23, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Would you be so kind as to rename this template's parameter "partner(s)" as "domestic partner(s)"? The documentation already specifies that it's for domestic partners, but as per our discussion on the template talk page, confusion would be reduced with a rename of the parameter itself. Thanks, Melty girl (talk) 07:53, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Changing a parameter name is tricky, we would have to find the pages that use the old name and on each page change the name in the template call. Alternatively we can add the possibility of using the new name, while also keeping the code for the old one, for backward compatibility.--Patrick (talk) 10:19, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
I do realize that changing the parameter name would render the current "partners" invisible. But consensus is there for this change, and editors who maintain pages that currently use the "partner" parameter will go to the template page and discover what's happened. Then they will either correct the parameter name or realize that what they had entered is inappropriate -- and that's the intended result. We want users to be alerted to the proper use of the parameter because of the existing problems. The current entries will not be lost, they will only be invisible and are easily fixed. I think the consensus decision should be implemented. Thanks for your help. --Melty girl (talk) 18:20, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for making the change! --Melty girl (talk) 04:04, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template Help

Thanks for you reply on the subject of Template:US state navigation box I felt brave enough to edit the South Carolina template, but I am worried that I might mess things up editing the US State template. [edit] Tax Deduction

Hey Patrick, I restored the distinction between tax deduction and tax credit that you removed. It's possible my language was not as clear as it could be, but this is an important distinction and also serves to link important tax concepts together. Feel free to change the language if you'd like it to be clearer. Twinotter (talk) 19:27, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

If you have e.g. a flat tax of 30% with a tax return, then the result is progressive, tax varies from 0% for low incomes to almost 30% for a large income.--Patrick (talk) 00:41, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Once (film): user blocking or page protection?

Hello again -- I'm a major contributor to the page for Once, and we're having edit war trouble with an IP user who posts from many IPs that start with 71.99. If you check the history, you'll see that this person insists on adding a Czech quote from the movie to the Plot section; another user and I have reverted, but this person keeps coming back despite discussion. Different users who say they know Czech have disagreed about what the phase in question actually is (and it's not verifiable for most English WP users), the phase isn't subtitled onscreen, and quotes in film plot summaries is not neceessary anyway. The talk page shows that the user has been uncivil, won't discuss, and ignores current and past discussions on the topic there and at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Films/Archive_16#Question_about_sourcing_in_plots_of_film_articles. But can a roaming user be blocked for edit warring? Does this merit page protection to ward off this anon editor? Thanks for your help. --Melty girl (talk) 22:32, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Bunch of lies here? She clearly says:"Miluju Tebe". I did not add translation of the meaning as per plot?

and meltygirl argument:" Different users who say they know Czech have disagreed about what the phase in question actually " is big LYE! there is no such a disagreetment. 71.99.117.144 (talk) 03:54, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Um, check the talk page and you'll see where someone else quotes the Czech differently. And I never said this user added a translation. --Melty girl (talk) 06:37, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Patrick! --Melty girl (talk) 18:52, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

The anon user is back. Discussion of the issue is ongoing among civil editors, and the issue has shifted slightly, because a source was found, and the info was added to the Production section. WikiProject Films editors favor keeping the info out of the Plot section. But the abusive anon user has returned and is reverting. Could you put a longer protection on the article so that only registered users may edit? Thanks, Melty girl (talk) 19:14, 18 January 2008 (UTC): So meltygirl says "please protect" and you just go blindly and protect? No one is interpreting "miluju Te" otherwise than "I Love You" . Meltygirl is clearly lying here and there. Without any consequences, and that is just ok with you right? 71.99.125.232 (talk) 06:05, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

In the case of a controversy it seems practical that the parties concerned log in.--Patrick (talk) 23:35, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fiorano Software

Hi

Pls find below the content I would like to write an article on Fiorano Software and everytime I write I get it blocked.

Pls find below the article and suggest,

Fiorano Software

Fiorano Software Inc. is a software company, with headquarters in Los Gatos, California. Fiorano sells business integration software.

History :

Atul Saini founded the company in 1995 with the vision of bringing an architectural revolution in the realm of business integration.

One of the first entrepreneurs to realize the power of Java and JMS, Mr. Saini led Fiorano to become the first company to release a commercial Java product based on Sun Microsystem's Java Message Service in 1998. Today Fiorano's messaging product, FioranoMQ, is the acknowledged leading Java messaging server in the high growth messaging middleware market.

Mr. Saini has over 15 years of experience in the software industry. He has been a contributing member of the C++ Standards Committee and published an authoritative work on the subject "C++ Programming with the Standard Template Library" (Addison Wesley). Prior to founding Fiorano, Mr. Saini founded Modena Software Inc. which is a leading provider of C++ and Java Test Suites and Libraries. Prior to that, Mr. Saini led compiler development at HAL Computer Systems which was later acquired by Fujitsu of Japan. Mr. Saini holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Madras. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Editorarshi (talkcontribs) 07:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

We need an independent person who is familiar with this type of software. Such a person could judge the notability of the company and the software, and what is worth mentioning. Business integration software redirects to Enterprise application integration, so perhaps the editors of that article can take a look. Anyway, the first section is rather small, and the article needs internal links.--Patrick (talk) 09:30, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Preprocessor problems

Hi Patrick,

I guess you're probably quite busy with this sort of thing, but I'm struggling to get a template, Template:Graphical timeline (backlinks, edit), working with the new preprocessor. It uses nested templates, which I guess might be causing the problem; however, I can't find the page that detailed the changes and am struggling to get it working. If you could give me any tips as to how to get it fixed, that would be amazing.

Thanks, Verisimilus T 19:55, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

See Template:For_loop/doc#Usage, in the calls in Template:Graphical timeline (backlinks, edit) a change is needed for the constant values. Also, currently for up to 4 parameters a fixed value can be specified, and 5 are used.--Patrick (talk) 01:59, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
