Patuxent High School (pronounced- Pa-tucks-ent) is a comprehensive, four-year public high school in Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland. The school draws from the communities of Cove Point, the Chesapeake Ranch Estates, Drum Point and Solomons.

In 2003, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer recognized Patuxent for being ranked among the nation's top 700 most demanding public schools as reported by Newsweek. In April of 2005 Jay Mathews of the Washington Post rated Patuxent as one of the top 30 most exceptional public schools in the region. Patuxent High is recognized as the highest ranked school in Calvert County in the Advanced Placement Program offered by College Board. Calvert County is the highest ranked county in Maryland and Maryland is the highest ranked state in the nation.

Patuxent is a 2A school that competes in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference(SMAC). In 2006 the Varsity Girls Field Hockey team won the Regional finals, and went to the Maryland State finals. In 2007, the Boys' Soccer]] team won the SMAC championship and County Cup. In 2007 the Varisty Field Hockey team went undefeated all the way up until the Maryland State semi-finals, winning the SMAC championship and the Regional 2A Championship

The Patuxent High School NJROTC was formed in 1996. There are 100 cadets enrolled in the program.

[edit] Distinctions

Patuxent NJROTC has the distinction of holding the high school's only two national championships: one for its 2003 JROTC Orienteering National Championship and the other for its 2006 National Championship in Armed and Unarmed Standard Drill.

For the 2005-06 school year, Patuxent was selected by the Area 5 Manager Commander Hayes as the best unit in Area 5. Patuxent has held this honor for the past five years. They placed third at the Area 5 Regional Competition on March 16-17, 2007.

The unit recently participated in its regional competition, where it placed third overall. The company is currently the alternate team to go to Naval Air Station Pensacola where the Navy National Competition is held. On March 31 and April 1, the Orienteering team participated in the DVOA Interscholastic National Championship. The team placed 9th in the nation among high school varsity teams and 6th among JROTC teams. This was the team's best finish in the Interscholastic Championship since it placed first in 2003.
