Patties are a northern food, from the North-East of England. They are thought to have originated in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England where they are readily available.

The original pattie is a mix of mashed potato and sage blended together and made into a disc or square shape, then covered in batter and fried, much like a fish cake.

There are many different kinds of Pattie, but Meat Pattie (Corned Beef) and Cheese Pattie (Cheese and Onion) are the most common varieties.

Shown above is a rectangular pattie. Patties can be of various shapes but usually round or rectangular. The pattie in many instances replaces fish and is ordered with chips.
