Newton was educated at St Anthony's in Oakleigh where her obvious talents soon shone. The head nun Sister Jerome once amused the entire student gathering by spluttering at Newton that she was nothing but a "pop star". Her record now stands for itself and her contribution to the Australian music and entertainment industry is legendary. Remembered by fellow students as a kind person her talents might have been a little too much for 1950s Oakleigh to deal with.
On the 16th May 2008 she was robbed at Chadstone Shopping Centre. Priceless jewels inherited from her mother were stolen along with her wedding ring.
