Patriot Coal Corporation is a coal-mining company that is based in St. Louis Missouri. The company is a spin-off of most of the Eastern U.S.A. operations of Peabody Energy Corp.. Patriot is one of the largest coal miners east of the Mississippi river. The company owns mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. The company operates eight mines it owns; nearly a dozen other of its mines are operated by contractors. Last year Patriot Coal's mines yielded 24.3 million tons of coal. The company has 1.2 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves.
Patriot Coal's stock started trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PCX on Nov. 1, 2007.
