Patrick O. Murphy, a bricklayer and twenty-five year old resident of the Grove section in Lowell, is running as an independent candidate for the Massachusetts's 5th congressional district seat in a special election.[1][2] He is not to be confused with U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania Patrick Murphy.

Murphy's parents, Joan and Daniel Patrick Murphy, were teachers in the Lowell public schools. Murphy attended Philips Academy Andover on a scholarship. He went on to study at American University, Trinity College, in Dublin, and Emory University.
