Patriarch Nephon II of Constantinople
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nephon II (or Niphon II) served as Patriarch of Constantinople on three different occasions. His first term was from 1486 to 1488. He was then restored to the Ecumenical throne from 1497 to 1498, and was restored again in 1502, he last time serving only one year. He died in 1515 (or, by other accounts, 1460).
He was a native of Greece, and was tonsured a monk at Epidauros. After the death of his Elder Anthony, he went to Mount Athos, where he occupied himself by the copying of books. He was later chosen Metropolitan of Thessalonica.
Niphon is honoured as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His feast day is August 11 (for those churches which use the Julian Calendar, August 11 falls on August 24 of the modern Gregorian Calendar).
