[edit] History

Paton College was started in 1968 and consisted of nine houses [1] (Coughlan joined later), though some buildings were constructed in 1962. The college is named after John Lewis Paton, who was the first President of Memorial University College from 1926-1933 [1].

[edit] Residence Buildings

Paton College currently consists of ten buildings or residences where students can live as they attend school:

  • Barnes
  • Blackall
  • Bowater
  • Burke
  • Coughlan
  • Curtis
  • Doyle
  • Hatcher
  • Rothermere
  • Squires

Each residence can house up to 100 people at once, and students used to have the choice of living in either male, female or co-ed gendered houses, however as of 2005 the only remaining male house (Doyle) turned co-ed, and as of the 2008-2009 academic year Squires House will be turned co-ed leaving Blackall as the only remaining all-female house.

Residents can live in double or single rooms, with shared bathrooms on each floor. Each building has a TV room, a laundry room, a study room, a computer room, a lobby, and a trunk room for storage. Meals are provided from a central dining hall, known as R. Gushue Hall.

There are also 5 self-contained apartment buildings in the Burton's Pond complex that accommodate both graduate and undergrad students. Each building has two proctors who live in the court. These buildings are:

  • Baltimore Court
  • Cabot Court
  • Cartier Court
  • Guy Court
  • Gilbert Court

Laundry and mail facilities are located in Corte Real, as is the student common room, Primers.

Residents of Burton's Pond elect a student council called the Burton's Pond Student Association (BPSA). The BPSA has a President, Treasurer, Vice President, and representatives from the various courts. The BPSA also hires staff to run the Primers common room, and coordinates social activities for residents. In August 2007, the BPSA was dissolved and replaced with four separate court executives including a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Social Chair. Primers was also closed and renovated into the Billy Murray Common Room for students living in the Courts.

[edit] House Staff

Every house is essentially run by several people who live in it. These people are there to both enforce residence rules and ensure that a student's residence experience runs as smoothly as possible.

The houses each have a Proctor, who lives in an apartment in the residence and is the senior representative of the university in the house. He or she is responsible for various administrative duties such as room assignments and discipline, and can be referred to if students have problems that their resident assistants cannot solve.

A Resident Assistant or RA lives on each floor of a house. While RAs have several duties, they are mainly present to help students adjust to residence.

Each residence also has an Academic Don or AD who is there to help students with questions regarding their academics and help first-year residents adapt to university studies. The AD promotes good academic behaviour through direct statement and example. They are responsible for supervising house tutors (which are provided free of charge to residents) and some academic programming throughout each semester. The Academic Don is also knowledgeable about Memorial University's academic programs, regulations and resources available on campus.

Also Student Housing has a Residence Life Office composed of a Manager of Residence Life, Supervisor of Residence Life and two Residence Life Officers.

[edit] House Executive

Within each house, a group of executives is elected each year, consisting of a president, vice president, treasurer and social chair. The exec promote house spirit and are responsible for organizing house events and for representing the students of their house to housing administration and the university.
