At the time of Shivaji Maharaj or Nizams, Patil was the title given to a person who was granted a territory of land. The granted territory is usually referred to as the patilki or Watan. The patil was in effect the ruler of the territory, as he was entitled to the collected taxes. Royal Bhonsle family once a patil. According to the records Maloji bhosle (Grand Father of Chatrapati shivaji maharaj) was a patil of Villages near to Daund(In Pune Dist.) Royal clan Gaikwad once a patil of Lalvan near malegaon Royal clan Shinde once patil of village from Satara.


Patil is an Indian last name. It is predominantly used in the state of Maharashtra and also Marathi-speaking areas on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Patil is also the last name of people staying in Khandesh(North Maharashtra). The native language of Patils is marathi. Even patil is the Maratha title given to the village head. Many Patils were warriors in the Maratha army. Majority of royal clans are from Patil's.
