Patiala gharana

The Patiala Gharana is one of the most prominent gharanas of vocal Hindustani classical music. It was initially sponsored by rulers of the Patiala state of Punjab, which was famous for ghazal, thumri, and khayal.

Patiala Gharana was founded during rule of Maharaja Mohinder Singh by Ustad Jasae Khan ; and other early proponents like Ditae Khan and Ustad Kalu Khan, who became singers in the court of Maharaja of Patiala in late nineteenth century[1]. Patiala Gharana reached its zenith during mid-twentieth century under stalwarts like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

This school of music has had a number of famous musicians, many of whom came to be partronised by royal family of Patiala after the disintegration of the Mughal Empire at Delhi in the 18th century.
At the turn of the century, the Patiala Gharana founded by Ustad Ali Baksh son of Ustad Mia Kalu Ji with the help of Late Ustad Fateh Ali Khan popularily known as "Alia Fattu" and "Generale - Cornnel".
Ustad Ali Baksh has three childern, his son is Late Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan and two of his daughter Fhaiyaji Begum and Akhtari Begum , both are married at Rampur,UP.
Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan has three sons, all three are very famous classical vocalist as Late Ustad Amanat Ali Khan , Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Hamid Ali Khan.
Ustad Ashique Ali Khan was the son of Late Ustad Fateh Ali Khan.Late Ustad Baakar Hussain Khan (from Maler kotla, punjab) was also blood-relative with Patiala Gharana. The world renowned Late Ustad Asad Amanat Ali Khan, who died recently in 2007 was the son of late Ustad Amanat Ali Khan.
Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Hamid Ali Khan and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan presently represent the Patiala Gharana.
Late Ustad Gohar Ali Khan , the famous violin player born in Rampur, UP and lived at delhi was the son of Akhatri Begum who was daughter of founder of Patiala Gharana Ali Baksh Generale. Presently Johar Ali Khan son of Late Ustad Gohar Ali Khan is the only violin player in the continuation of the Patiala Gharana family. This school of music continues to get the patronage of the State though the North Zone Culture Centre (NZCC) established at Patiala.
