The Patan District of India is located in northern Gujarat. It is surrounded by Banas Kantha District to its north and northeast, Mehsan to its south and southeast and Kutch District and Kutch nu Nanu Ran (Little Rann of Kutch). Its eastern areas, Harij and Sami, bordering Kutch are quite sensitive[citation needed] as there is no settled population between there and the border of Pakistan even though geographically the border is quite some distance away.
The district was carved out mainly from Mehsana District along with Radhanpur and Santalpur Talukas from Banaskantha District. Its headquarters is the city of Patan, Gujarat. Apart from Patan, Modhera is also an important tourist destination. The district had a population of 1,182,709 of which 20.16% were urban as of 2001. [1]
