[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Mulcahy plays his club hurling with his local Newtownshandrum club. He enjoyed some success at underage levels before winning a county intermediate title in 1996. That same year he won a county senior medal with divisional side Avondhu. Four years later in 2000 Mulcahy was instrumental at centre-back in helping the Newtownshandrum club to win its first ever senior county championship title. Three years later in 2003 he added a second senior county title before later landing a Munster club hurling medal as well as an All-Ireland club medal. In 2006 Mulcahy won another brace of county and provincial medals, however, Newtown were later defeated by Portumna in the All-Ireland final.
[edit] Inter-county
Mulcahy first donned the red jersey of Cork in 1995, lining out at full-back on the county’s under-21 team that was beaten by Tipperary in the Munster championship. Two years later in 1997 he won an All-Ireland medal with the Cork intermediate team, however, Mulcahy had to wait until 2000 before making his senior debut. After a reasonably good performance in the National Hurling League he started at centre-back when Cork lost their opening Munster Championship game to Limerick.
Mulcahy played no part in the 2002 Championship but he was restored to favour under the new manager, Donal O'Grady, in 2003. That year he won his first senior Munster title, however, Cork lost out to Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. In 2004 Mulcahy sustained a serious leg injury in a road accident which ruled him out of the 2004 championship. He surprisingly returned to action in 2005, replacing the injured Wayne Sherlock. That year Mulcahy won his second Munster title before winning his first All-Ireland medal following a win over Galway. His performance throughout the year earned him his first All-Star award. In 2006 Mulcahy was appointed captain of the senior hurling team. He guided them to another Munster title, however, Cork were defeated by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. Mulcahy retired from inter-county hurling following this game.
