[edit] Career

[edit] NSW Development Tour Of Europe

In September 2006 McCabe was called up to the NSW first team squad for a development tour of Europe.[3]He made his Waratahs debut in the number 14 jumper playing as a right winger against Northhampton Wanderers at Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton UK on Monday 2 October 2006. McCabe is played most often as a fullback.[1]

On 30 October 2006, McCabe scored a crucial try for NSW against Leinster A in Dublin as the Waratahs finished their European Development Tour with a hard fought 20-17 victory. He crashed over in the 38th minute to level the scores 10-10 at the break.[4]

At the NSW Waratahs Academy Awards held on the 26 April 2006 McCabe won the Academy Strength & Conditioning Achievement Award.[5]

[edit] Australian Rugby Championship

Prior to the 2007 season, Central Coast Rays head coach John McKee named McCabe alongside Jared Waerea-Hargreaves as Australian U/19 reps who were in the running for a position in the squad.[6]. McCabe was selected alongside Hargreaves in the squad announced in July.[7][8] He made his debut in round 5 in a 29-10 home victory over the Ballymore Tornadoes[9], and scored his first try in a 55-7 victory over the Melbourne Rebels.[10]

McCabe received an ARC winner's medal as part of the 2007 Rays side which defeated the Melbourne Rebels 20-12 in the final at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Gosford.[11]

[edit] Sydney Club Rugby

McCabe made his First Grade debut for Warringah on April 29th 2007 in a game the Rats won 51-10 over Penrith. He also scored a try in this game.[12] McCabe then crossed again the next week in Warringah's bonus point victory over Randwick despite coming on as a substitute.

[edit] 2007 U/19 World Cup

McCabe was named amongst 12 other NSW players in the Australian team to contest the IRB Under 19 World Cup in Belfast. He started the first match on Thursday the 5th of April against the host nation Ireland in the unfamiliar position of flyhalf. This was due to both Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper not being selected because of Super 14 duties. Despite Ireland leading 5-0 at half time, Australia won the game 15-10 with 2 tries from winger Andrew Barrett.[13]

McCabe again started in Australia's 23-12 defeat of Fiji. In the third game he was used as a substitute replacing captain Brett Gillespie in the 68th minute in a game Australia again won 30-11. However in Australia's semi final game against South Africa coach Phil Mooney decided not to substitute McCabe on and the team lost 32-18 to exit the tournament. [14] Without him the team conceded 32 points in one game, 1 point less than they had conceded in the past three games with him. McCabe was returned to the starting side in 3rd/4th place playoff against Wales in his preferred position of fullback. Australia won the game 25-21.[15] Thus every time McCabe took the field Australia won.
