Hegarty first came to prominence as a hurler with the Cork under-21 team. In 1968 he captained the team from the centre-back position to both Munster and [[All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship|All-Ireland honours. The following year Hegarty made his senior debut, winning a National Hurling League medal in the process. Later that year he claimed his first senior Munster title, however, Cork were subsequently defeated by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final.

1970 began well for Hegarty, with Cork claiming a second consecutive set of National League and Munster honours. He later won his first All-Ireland medal following Cork’s victory over Wexford in the first 80-minute championship decider. Two years later in 1972 Hegarty won a third National League title with Cork. Once again the team continued their championship dominance by capturing a third Munster crown in four years. Unfortunately, Kilkenny once again accounted for Cork in an epic All-Ireland final. 1974 saw Hegarty win a fourth National League medal, however, Cork exited the championship at an early stage. The team bounced back in 1975 with Hegarty picking up a fourth Munster Championship medal. Unfortunately, Galway later defeated Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final.
