What is the meaning of this category? Is it to collect only the five biggest basilicas in Rome? In that case, it would be better to merge them in Category:Basilica churches of Rome. Is it to collect the most important basilicas? In that case these basilicas should be included also in Category:Basilica churches of Rome, and you should provide a reason why Santa Croce in Gerusalemme is not here, for example. --Panairjdde 16:14, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

My reasons stem from those in the article minor basilica, specifically the section on Major Basilicas. There are 5 basilica churches in Rome that have a higher canonical status than all others in Rome and are thusly called major basilicas. The major does not refer to their size but their hierarchical importance. Other basilica churches in Rome, like Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, are called minor basilicas. The privileges of a minor basilica are often granted to churches outside of Rome, such as the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. While Santa Croce has the privilege of being one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome, it has the canonical status of a [[minor basilica]], which is why it is not included in this category. If you refer to patriachal basilicas, they are four (see: [1].)

Interesting. I always thought the patriarchal basilicas included St. Lawrence outside the Walls, especially considering that the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem used to be headquartered there. I know the Catholic Encyclopedia claims it to be so [2], but that's an old reference and St. Lawrence could have been demoted or might only be informally considered a patriarchal basilica. But, yes, the purpose of this category is to list the patriarchal basilicas, which the author of the category and the author of the [[[[[[[minor basilica]]]]]] article both call Major Basilicas due to the Catholic Encyclopedia article's use of the term. Perhaps a rename? Pmadrid 20:06, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I support the movement of the page. Even if my question is if there are other patriarcal basilicas around the world.--Panairjdde 22:35, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Addendum: the same article of St. Lawrence says it was a partiarchal basilica until 1847.--Panairjdde 18:05, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
