Passage to Zarahemla was originally written as a screen play by Chris Heimerdinger in 1999 under the working title Summer of the Nephite. After being rewritten several times it was published as a novel in November of 2003. A movie version of Passage to Zarahemla, based on the screenplay, has officially been in production since the summer of 2005. Released to theaters October 15, 2007.

The movie was filmed mostly in Leeds, Utah. Chris directed the movie and created the songs used in the movie. He also edited the film and plays a small role. Noted cast members are Summer Naomi Smart ("Esther", "Beauty and the Beast"), Brian Kary (Episode of "Desperate Housewives"), Bryce Chamberlain ("Man's Search For Happiness"--Old Version), Jan Felt ("Everwood", "Mobsters and Mormons"), and Alex Petrovich ("Lost" 2nd Season Finale, "Bold and the Beautiful"). Some of Chris' family members also have small parts in the film.

Sakerra and Brock McConnell are Californians who are being forced by law to separate after their mother's death by overdose. In an attempt to keep the small family together, the orphans steal a car and drive to their Mormon relatives in southern Utah. Within a forest on their relatives farm is a portal to the ancient American world, where the Nephites are fighting to protect their lives from the ruthless attacks of the Gadiantons. This portal was opened up when an earthquake hit the area. Kerra and Brock get associated in this fight, but are also being chased by the gang that Brock used to be in called the Shamans.
