It was originally designed for use by the United States Marine Corps, however the United States Navy turned it over to the United States Army Air Forces Fourth Air Force to use for coastal defense in exchange for the Marines using nearby Lemoore Naval Air Station.

Its military use ended on 15 October 1944 and the facility was turned over for civilian use, being initially named Archie Dean Field.
