Image copyright tags
Thanks for uploading Image:Fernanda ribeiro.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Zzyzx11 | Talk 00:05, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image copyright problem
Thanks for uploading Image:Greece_champions_euro2004.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. Obrigado
Estou a meio de escrever dois: History of Portugal (711-1112) e History of Portugal (1834-1910).
Qualquer coisa diz-me. Cumprimentos! Joaopais 00:38, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Portugal at the Olympics
Hi, thanks for your support of my work! As it turns out, Portugal was next on my list of nations to do today... I am more or less working through the nations in order of their first appearance at the Games, and Portugal was my last one for 1912. Anyway, I have an Excel spreadsheet that I use to quickly generate the infobox templates and the article stubs, so I don't need help with that. However, what would be helpful is if you can fill in the names of the medal winners to help expand the stubs to the next level. For example, take a look at what I did on Portugal at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The easiest way to get the names and events of the medal winners is to follow the reference link to the IOC medal database. I am sure you are much better at Portuguese names than I am! Thanks for your help! Andrwsc 18:04, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- OK! I'll be glad to do that. And about the infoboxes, if i find data that i can update them with (flagbearer, number of competitors and number of sports), am i "authorized" to do that? :D Parutakupiu talk || contribs 18:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

SVG graphics
Hi there, I used Inkscape (download from here) to simply open the PNG file and save as SVG, with no other editing required. It seemed to work, and the file size was a lot smaller. Inkscape seems extremely powerful, but I haven't found the time to learn all the features. By the way, in your list of pictograms, you forgot softball. ;) Cheers, Andrwsc 00:50, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Template:Olympic Games Water motorsports
Hi, we just finished a Template for Deletion discussion on that template (see Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 November 21) but you re-created it again. Do you really think it is necessary? There are no other pages to "navigate" to, nor will there likely ever be. Unless you object, could you put a {{db-author}} request on the page and remove from the article? Thanks, Andrwsc 08:04, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- For some reason, I had this page watched and I can't help but to notice that Andrwsc, you wanted them deleted. Now I'm not implying that linking between one page and one that doesn't exist is right, but I think we've had this discussion once before. In the past and now, I think that there should be a template for all sports that have been played as an actual sport. It just seems to make all pages the same, rather than not having a template for some pages that only have one viable link. Maybe we should reconsider it...? I don't know. It's really not too big a deal. → JARED (t) 20:22, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

-
- Well, my feeling is that the whole purpose of a navigation box is actually to "navigate" between pages. In this case, there will probably only ever be one page for Water motorsports. I see no value in creating "List of Olympic medalists in sport" pages for sports that only appeared in a single Games. I also see no value in creating an overview "Sport at the Olympics" page for single-appearance sports. As for the demonstration in 1900, I suppose someday someone will create a page out of the French official report, but in the meantime, I just see no value in that template.
- Now, if you really want to see that box on Water motorsports at the 1908 Summer Olympics, then my suggestion would be to put the code inline on that page. A single-use template that is only transcluded once is an inappropriate use of the Template namespace, in my opinion. Andrwsc 21:41, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Andrwsc, I'm sorry, I didn't know it already existed (I could've checked the deletion log, indeed, but I didn't even consider it...) and I only re-created it because it was a sport which had more than one link (official in 1908 and demo in 1900 as in Olympic sports) - that was the only reason. If it had been a single Olympiad sport I wouldn't even touched it!! I'll put it up for deletion hoping people won't be upset for a repeated discussion :( Sorry. License tagging for Image:1912 Summer Olympic logo.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:1912 Summer Olympic logo.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:04, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
2009 Lusophony Games
See WP:NOT#CBALL. The article seemed lacking in solid information, it seems all we know is that it will be in 2009 (which we already know from the title), and that Portugal is organising it. When there is a decent volume of useful information (venue, dates, events, etc.), then I've no problem with it becoming its own article again further down the line. Hope this answers your question. Parameters through templates
{{helpme}}
Hi, i'm testing a template A which uses a parameter M to specify a value Z. Inside this template A, I also use a parameter N through which I call a template B. Inside this second template, i specify other parameters but also the same parameter M from the parent template. But i don't know how or if it's possible to "pass" the parameter M's value Z, in the parent template (A), to this child template (B). Have i made myself clear? I hope so... Could anyone help me? Parameter values through nested templates
As far as I know, that is not possible if use of Template B is optional.
You can hardcode Template B (or a series of similar templates) into Template A (see for example the "Status" variable of {{taxobox}}, or "iucn_category" of {{Infobox Protected area}}). You can also hardcode it so that IF Template B is used, the variable then is defined as value Z. If the syntax you give me is the one that is to appear in the article, that is impossible to the best of my knowledge, and thebest you can do is document that the variabe must be identical. OlympicYear(Header/Footer)
Hi, Jonel. As creator of the templates {{OlympicYearHeader}} and {{OlympicYearFooter}}, you should know (if you haven't seen my reply to your topic at the WikiProject discussion page) that I developed your code so that both could be applied for the Winter sports also – see the header code and its usage; the same would be applied to the footer code.
However, I believe it's better if those years where a specific sport was not included in the programme simply don't appear, saving unnecessary columns and preventing confusion on table format (e.g. applying empty rowspan-shaded columns on nation tables which can be very long). What do you think? Parutakupiu talk || contribs 05:48, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, I saw you did the winter thing, looks great. As for the non-inclusion of noncompeting years, it's something that I think works better in some cases than others. I mean, leading blank columns, such as the template as I made it would provide for Synchronized swimming at the Summer Olympics, are quite pointless and look dumb, but for sports where there are gaps in the middle of the appearance years (such as Bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics) hidden years wouldn't let the reader know at first glance that there was a gap--the year "60" is missing, but that's not immediately obvious, nor is it clear what it means, since "40" and "44" aren't there either. I don't have real strong opinions either way; whatever you folks decide is fine with me. -- Jonel | Speak 12:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Alô. Um obrigado atrasado por te teres juntado ao projecto. Sim, por favor adiciona a template a todas as paginas relacionadas com Portugal, mas não coloques templates sem o nível de importancia do artigo.
{{WikiProject Portugal|class=Algo|importance=Mid}}

- Yeah. I could see free-use images being a problem, unless there is something public domain of a historical nature, not sure how Portugeuse law works on that sort of thing. {{OlympicsWikiProject}}
Hey there. You seem to know your way around this template. I'm usually good with all that stuff, but this one I don't even want to look at. I think the problem is that NA-importance articles are being classified still under the unknown-importance category (see Template talk:Olympic games medal count for instance). Could you take a look and see what's causing this? Thanks. The whole coding of the template is messy, so I'm afraid I'll mess something up! └Jared┘┌talk┐ 00:36, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it seems so. I'll take a look on the template code and I'll check you back soon. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 00:41, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- The bug is on the "importance" category attribution coding towards the end: there's a #switch function where the string "NA" isn't defined, so it falls on the #default result "Unknown-importance". You want me to code it so that "NA-importance" articles don't fall on any category? Parutakupiu talk || contribs 00:49, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Event pictograms?
Challenging! Who's gonna make them? LOL. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 01:42, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- I wasn't sure what you were talking about at first, but I think you mean the thing that I just did to the Olympic Header etc. template. I wasn't thinking that they would be for specific events (that's actually very interesting, though) but I was going to try to use the same templates on Olympic sports, because the pictograms look nice there. I was thinking to try to get it to FA list status, so I would need to fix up the lists first. We'll see how my recent changes go, and if they don't work as planned, I'll change it back. Again, in no way was I suggesting that you'd make all those pictograms! Haha.
- By the way, what program did you use to make the other ones. If I have a chance (that'll probably be never) I'll take a crack at doing some other ones. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 10:54, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Yes, it was on the course of those edits that I posted that message. Of course, I knew you weren't suggesting, it was a joke :P Actually, I came up with that idea when I saw those changes and, even though I could end up being the maker of those hundreds of new pictograms (it's better to keep the design consistency), I wouldn't mind! First, I'd have to do the remaining Winter sports who still don't have one.
-
- My initial idea was to take advantage of the existing sport/discipline pictograms and only add a very specific label on it to relate the image with an event; nothing to much, that would be done instantly. But I'll let this turn into something more serious while I wait for developments. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 16:38, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I like them! You've captured those two sports really well! I think the only one of all the ones you've created that I'm not really fond of is ice hockey. It's basically the same pictogram as field hockey, but in ice hockey, players don't crouch over that far because the sticks are a lot longer. Anyway, keep up the great work! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrwsc (talk • contribs)
- Thanks! I'll see if I can make that pictogram a little less field hockey-alike ;) Parutakupiu talk || contribs 21:00, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Comments section
Hey there. I was thinking about doing that recently. A lot of other WPs have them, but I've never seen ones that have the comments directly put onto the tag. Anyway, I was writing to ask whether signing your name is appropriate on the Comments section. When I saw that the comments were actually put onto the talk page tag, it seems like I shouldn't have, and all the person would have to do to see who left the comments would be to go to the history section.
Also, should the comments section on the tag be a openable-closable list like Olympics To-do? It seems rather big, and as long as it's clear that those are the comments specific to this page, it would be fine to keep it closed. Maybe I'll take a look at the coding and see what I can try. But thanks a lot for doing this! └Jared┘┌talk┐ 14:29, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- FYI, nevermind about my test, I don't know what I'm doing in there! └Jared┘┌talk┐ 14:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

- LOL, I'll have to take a look at it again because there were some edits left to make. And now I could see the true look of my changes by viewing Category:Olympics articles with comments. A funny thing I didn't expect was that the comments page would be the SAME for every WP banner tag... of course! I was wondering how could it be that there were comments dated from 2006 - they were posted for other WP ratings :P I agree that the section should be openable-closable, it was another thing I forgot to address. I'll be right on it! Parutakupiu talk || contribs 02:53, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Pictogram
Hey, take a look at the main page! (And if you're too late, see here.) └Jared┘┌talk┐ 15:40, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It's down. It was on the main page for like 2 minutes, though. Congrats. I'm trying to get it put back up, but with no luck! └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:53, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

- As you'll see by this post's date, I was too. late to see it "live". But it wasn't the fact that the pictogram appeared on the main page for a brief moment that satisfied me - I also saw the way you defend its application, on Ian Thorpe's TFA talk page ;) I really appreciated that! But even I would prefer a photo of Thorpe, instead. Thank you, Jared! Parutakupiu talk || contribs 02:47, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
The Olympics Barnstar
The Olympics Barnstar | ||
For your astounding contributions to Olympics-related articles—including your set of pictograms, all the assessment you've done recently, expansion of the diving articles, and your most recent (and ongoing) edits to Olympic sports and 2012 Summer Olympics bids—I hereby award you this long-deserved barnstar of appreciation. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 02:19, 29 March 2007 (UTC) |
2012 Olympic Bids
I just want to apologize if I went a little overboard with that list. It took me about an hour to make that which is just a testament to how much potential I think this article has. I wouldn't have spent so much time on it if I didn't think you could or would do it. You've done a fantastic job so far, and as a non-native English speaker, I can only imagine how difficult it must be. If you address my problems, I think this article will be 100% FA worthy. Thanks, JHMM13 03:52, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Please, don't apologize! It's me that has to thank you for your availability! We would all like to have "lists" like that, it means editors care about our job and what being done on that article ;) I really appreciate the time and the thorough copy-editing you made so far. As we speak, I'm trying to answer to all the suggestions you made, so I hope that tomorrow (it's 5:00 am here) I might have all (or most) of them addressed. Writing English isn't that hard for me because I've grown hearing this language, since a young kid, and I'm used to write on foreign web forums and reading college books and scientific articles in English ;) I actually like doing it, even though I don't have the ease and "perfection" of a native speaker.
- Once again, thank you very much, JHMM13! Parutakupiu talk || contribs 04:05, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

- I've copyedited your copyedits :-). Just as a small matter, you should employ a comma "guideline" that I often liked to follow when I was really becoming acquainted with the rules: When in doubt, leave it out. You seem to often precede a preposition with a comma, but like I said before...tis but a trifle. I can easily run through any new edits you make and edit them for full correctness. I'll be keeping an eye on the page, but I'm going to sleep now too, so it may take a little while. Good luck! JHMM13 05:51, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

-
- I guess I'll follow your advice... and leave the copy-editing for the native speakers ;) But there are some things you mistakenly copy-edited that aren't errors and I'll have to fix. I'm repeating myself but thank you for your help. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 15:23, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

- Hey, Parutakupiu. I'm sorry for the delay in copyediting your article. I've been traveling the last few days and I've been too busy. I'll see what I can do right now and I'll check what changes you've made. I hope I didn't offend you in suggesting your English isn't worthy of copyediting :-(. Trust me, it is extremely good, but you make errors here and there, and in fixing them I might make a factual error for the sake of flow. You should review any changes I make to see if they're factually accurate, but generally speaking, I'm a pretty good writer, so you can trust my copyediting ;-D. It's a collaborative and painful process, but that's the way FAC should be. Ciao! JHMM13 02:19, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

- Hi, JHMM13. Please, don't apollogize for having a life! :D The fact that you've been the only user providing comments for my FAC is not your fault, lol. Offended?! If I was a native English speaker, then you'd be in trouble >:( (kidding!) Yes, erasing factual text is a normal thing to happen when one is on a copy-editing spree :) Don't worry, I'll be always double-checking your appreciated copyedits ;) Thanks! - I just thought of something that might be absolutely essential to this article: an infobox at the bottom of the page with a link to other olympic bids like you have at the bottom of 2012 Summer Olympics. This wouldn't be too hard to convert, but it might take a little bit of ingenuity. Let me know what you think, JHMM13 03:18, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

- Haha...yes I have no idea how that happened...I was a bit perplexed when I figured out what was going on. The reason I stopped editing it was because I thought there was a replication lag on Wikipedia and it wouldn't update the page to your edits! Oh man...big whoops. Anyway, I was just looking through the Madrid section and this still needs a reference: "During the last stages of the final selection, IOC member Prince Albert of Monaco questioned the security of Madrid, remembering the Al Qaeda terrorist attacks which took place in the city on March 11, 2004, killing 191 people. The Spanish delegation found this remark especially offensive and regarded the final election of London over Madrid as a consequence of Albert's words." It's probably not hard to find. - Tell me what you think about the NY section. Something you may not have noticed if you've never been to the this area (the one in which I grew up), is that Giants Stadium and Continental Airlines Arena are both in New Jersey (about a 5-minute drive from where I'm sitting right now, actually!). I made a mention to this fact in the article and you might want to add a link to the CAA because it is a major arena, but you don't have to. Giants Stadium is the more recognizable name there in that complex. However, you may want to rework the sentence to say, "and the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey." Or however that sentence goes. Now on to the next section. JHMM13 04:56, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- No problem at all! I'll keep helping out until the FAC finishes one way or another. Thanks for the barnstar! JHMM13 22:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

- Hi Parutakupiu. Thanks for your message about copyediting. Unfortunately, I won't be able to help during the course of your FAC. Another user requested my assistance before you, and copyediting can be time-intensive, so I only do the occasional article. Have you tried the Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors? They have a special section for FACs. –Outriggr § 03:49, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

- I gave it a quick once over, and only found a few minor changes. "Started emerging" is somewhat redundant; "emerged" is better. Also made one date formatting change and small wikilink change. Otherwise, looks great to me.Konczewski 14:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!!! I just reviewed the copyedits made to the Olympics article since my last edit and they're all really good! No errors anywhere, so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it. I still monitor the FAC everyday. JHMM13 03:40, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

- Well, there haven't been many copyedits after you, unfortunately. If I go and tell Tony about it he'll say it's all the same thing. Besides, the FAC section is being pushed down and all those comments almost pose as votes and people probably don't even look at it. I think it might take the same time as yours did :P Parutakupiu talk || contribs 03:53, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

I do plan on staying in the project. As soon as I get done with the nordic skiing which is sixty redlinks away, I will start on the sliding sports (bobsled, luge, and skeleton). Thank you. Chris 22:25, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
