Hi Paranoid, I have some answers to your questions on my talk page. Cheers, Kosebamse 14:59, 12 Oct 2003 (UTC)

It's not clear to me whether User:Cyan/Internet child pornography will be permitted to exist in the article namespace. If it is not, you may certainly keep a copy (or even the original , see Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page) at User:Paranoid/Internet child pornography. I tell you this because, although I have serious misgivings about the content of the article, neither do I want to discourage you from contributing to Wikipedia. Cheers, Cyan 21:22, 13 Oct 2003 (UTC)

I have moved the article to User:Paranoid/Internet child pornography. -- Cyan 22:45, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Hi Paranoid.

I disaggree with some of the changes you made to the Moscow page. You removed: "Moscow presents many obstacles to the foreign tourist. The visa system is antiquated and costly. Hotels are too few and too expensive. Also, with the recent terrorist actions being associated with the darker-skinned Caucasian population, official police racism against all dark skin people is rife."

On racism, i think it does apply to tourists. Severly of my french and spanish friends have been harrased by the police in moscow because of their slightly darker complection. Anyone with black skin is taking their lives in their hands by visiting the city. 35 Africans were burned to death last november when their appartment block was set alight. The police announced it to be an accident before they arrived on the scene (even though they had been called to the building the night before by residents who had chased away an arsonist). Asian visitors (including many of the cities bankers from Japan) are currently advised by their embassies not to use the metro for safty reasons.

There is a great shortage of hotels. I have connections with the business community in Moscow. They tell me that if they haven't booked a room for visiting client at least 2 months before all the rooms will be gone. And noone who has ever tried to get a visa will disaggree that the system is awful.

[edit] Logarithmic timeline of current events

Hi, Paranoid,

I just updated the Logarithmic timeline of current events with a number of events, and I'd like you to take a look at it. I'm sure I didn't do an excellent job, but perhaps you'll find something better than the California recall election for that time slot. -- ke4roh 00:29, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] EasyTimeline

Paranoid, colons in text are possible by putting text between double quotes. I made some adjustments to image size and vertical position of texts to avoid overlaps, of course just suggestions. Repeating options can be specified once, if the line contains no actual event (at, from or till) these values will become new defaults, if combined with an event they effect that event only (overrule the default). So nothing wrong with what you did, but it is a bit more concise now. Let me know if you have any other questions, feedback. Cheers, Erik Zachte 00:25, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Oops I did not look well enough, text before the colon is now missing. I'll soon upload a new version of ET, will check this bug first. Erik Zachte 00:40, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Inquiry re: Your photo of Japanese Imperial Palace garden

Hello Paranoid, I've done some Photoshopping of your picture,

Your original shot of Japanese Imperial Palace
Your original shot of Japanese Imperial Palace

but I don't want to upload it unless you agree. Mostly, I opened the shadows and lightened the photo. Increased the saturation. Sharpened the building a bit.

I also don't quite know how to give you credit for it.

Please let me know if you'd like to see it.

Fg2 11:58, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

If your new version looks better, please upload it (I'll see it when you do it). I don't mind at all. Crediting me is not really necessary, thanks. :) Paranoid 12:28, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Some luck...

It didn't replace the original image. Tried again, with the extension .jpe (as your original) rather than .jpg (as the image file title) and it went to

where you can see it.

I guess I'm getting sleepy. Maybe try again tomorrow.

Anyhow, see if you like it. Fg2 13:09, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It still isn't perfect, since the source is the scan of a print made with a cheap camera. I would probably suggest using selective brightening (or whatever it is called) when you only increase the brightness of the darkest (shadow) parts. Paranoid 13:18, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Let me get this right -- you will quit reverting the Hussein article, if I find a source which discusses confusion over Hussein's name? Lirath Q. Pynnor

First, sorry for the unnecessary revert. It seems that the compromise version appeared after I started the edit and I overwrote it. But the comment I left still stands. I think we will make some progress in the debate over the name if you can give a reference that supports your position that calling Saddam Saddam is bad. Even though I probably don't care as much as some other participants, I would still like the edit war to stop. And if you can give such reference, it would be enough of a justification for most to have a notice about the name (though it appears that currently there is one) or even refer to Saddam as Saddam Hussein (if your reference would be particularly strong). As the goal of Wikipedia is to reach factual consensus (about what constitutes a fact, not what we think about it), I think that providing a source would help (as the opinion of a single user isn't worth much by itself). I split off history of brain imaging from "brain imaging," leaving a short summary at the orginal article. I considered your suggestion of splitting off the implications section and practical applications sections into new articles, but eventually decided they fit best in the context of the history and possible future of the field. The "brain imaging" article reads much better now - thanks for your suggestions on how to split it up. Sayeth 16:46, Aug 19, 2004 (UTC)

Hey is there a lot of free speech in communist countries?

There is some. Not a lot, and especially not when it's related to the political system. Some things are just accepted as they are. In the USA it is accepted that blacks are as good as whites - this is not open for discussion. In Cuba it is accepted that planned economy and socialism/communism are the way to go - similarly not open for discussion. Other than that, there are freedom of speech and other freedoms. [edit] Vagina article

Paranoid, I reverted yr edits on purpose. Your edits seemed to be focussed on sexual information relating to the vagina which was mostly trivial. Women in asia or wherever performing tricks with their vaginas is not pertinent information to a general article on the vagina. Same goes for the rest of yr edits. I have no problem with this information being presented somewhere on wikipedia in a relevant context but I don't think it worthy of inclusion in this article. Oska 23:53, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Child Sexual Abuse

All your edits are tendentious in favour of pedophiles. "Child sexual abuse denotes sexual activities with children that are perpetrated against an individual without consent" is plainly wrong, "consent" is not possible.

Consent is possible. For example, a 15 year old can give informed consent in many countries. In other counties a 13 year old can give consent to a 17 year old. In yet other countries the law recognises that even a small child can give consent, but simply ignores this. Even American law recognises that children can give "simple consent" even though they can't give informed consent. You were mistaken when you said it's impossible.

With "The research has suffered from lack of common methodology, unclear definitions, use of questionable techniques for retrospective studies, such as memory recovery (see false memories), bias, unjustified presumptions and other factors." you focus on critique of research that is usually dangerous for pedophiles,

I focus on critique because the research was criticised to some extent by many (may be even most) researchers. The problems (listed above) are noted by any survey of existing literature that I read.

"Child sexual abuse is regarded as particularly reprehensible in many modern societies, however, the ambiguity of the definition and the intensity of fear and reprehension prompted some critics to argue that in some respects this is a result of mass hysteria and not rational view towards specific problems." is panic of abusers. Get-back-world-respect 13:35, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well, you wouldn't say that the reaction towards presumably ritual child abuses in day care was normal, would you? Even such respectful authors as Finkelhor spread the rumours because they didn't treat the findings with proper scientific scepticism and because they all too often made ridiculous assumptions on which they based their conclusions. I am not denying that certain activities that are usually understood under CSA happen and are harmful, but being scared of "Child sexual abuse" per se is silly, because it's such a vague concept.

P.S. Perhaps we can continue the discussion at the article talk page, so that others can see it and contribute. If you agree, feel free to move this text there. Paranoid 13:53, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] random walk

Paranoid hi. I looked at your edits of random walk and I'm not sure the stuff belongs there. It's way larger than all the others — they could be expanded, of course, but then they would cover most of the article which would have to be renamed "applications of random walk"... In short, wouldn't it be better to put this text as a section in some article on finance or financial mathematics (or make it into a page of its own) and put in the random walk page a synopsis and link? Gadykozma 01:57, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

That's a valid remark, but I simply don't know where to put it. I spent some time thinking, but simply could not come with a good idea. Paranoid 07:52, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Check the links in Financial mathematics (obviously you know more about the subject than I do) if any one fits. If not, make it into a new page, called "Randomness of share prices" or somesuch. What do you say? Gadykozma 16:34, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Feynman

Your rephrase from more concrete to less useful but more fun is a slight POV. Feynman's view, as a physicist, did not necessarily include utility as a criterion. It is true that he was a natural engineer, but that is not quite as desirable an attribute for being a physicist, who must also be creative about insights into Nature. That is what he felt burned-out about, and that is why he gave up trying to be the superman. So instead, he just turned his analytical ability to the nutating dish. Ancheta Wis 12:14, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

This is Feynman's POV. Of course, we have a problem of reliable sources here - Surely You Are Joking is not an academic research paper, but Feynman himself said "I'm going to play with physics, whenever I want to, without worrying about any importance whatsoever." and "There's no importance whatsoever. I'm just doing it for the fun of it." about his work on the nutating dish physics. Paranoid 12:21, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] JK Rowling

Actually, whether Rowling is writing "some deep work" or not is a matter of opinion. I happen to think she is and I would guess that you happen to think she is not. I happen to think the Matrix isn't particularly significant and it would appear that you do, which is also a matter of opinion. How about we change that sentence to say that the name could have come from a number of classical sources and link to a disambiguation page? I stand by my revert, the origins of names are important in that series and the name needs to be linked to some potential explanation to reflect that importance. They're not childrens books, you know! aec 14:07, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm open to suggestions. If you can find more people that agree with you, I'm not going to stop it. I didn't set that rule, but I kinda understand it. We have to draw the line to define a new article somewhere. Why not post a topic on the talk page and see what others think?

Please note that I'm not the "boss" of the section or anything. I merely didn't include it in my update because I like to stick with the existing rules. If you want to suggest a new policy, just go ahead. In the mean time, I'll see if I can do something to stretch the rules a bit. Mgm|(talk) 19:02, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Link Police

I'm surprised that you left only one link on the sex toys page. The the fact that it's crammed with advertising and lacks a good deal of the information found on the 'poorly written' site of mine that you removed suggests to me that the remaining site is your own.

However I'm going to look at re-writing some portions of my 'poorly written' site regardless. I think some of the knowledge it offers is fairly unique, and the site has been useful to many people over the years.

I think I accidentally make a mistake. I have mistaken your site for one of the others I removed earlier today. Your site is not poorly written, in fact, it's written rather well. So I am sorry for the comment in the edit summary. I still think that there shouldn't be more than one external link here, since they offer a lot of duplicate information, but I am not going to argue that the one included now is much better than your site. BTW, I am in no way connected to that site, as a matter of fact, I (shame on me) have never actually used a sex toy, much less sell one. :( It is still against Wikipedia policy to include self-promotion and commercial links, so I do not think your site should be linked, but feel free to discuss it with others on Talk:Sex toy. Paranoid 19:50, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for saying it's not poorly written. I think there is room for both sites to be there, or maybe just a link to the DMOZ, Yahoo or Wikimoz category that both sites are in would be best? I simply feel that our site covers a range of items that the other doesn't touch on, and those are the types of questions I answer most when I'm contacted by the curious.Having one link is fine, and reduces clutter, but the heading is external links in the plural, and I've already helped a few Wiki surfers with advice, so I think my link had merit. Still I guess it's a community, and if my link is pushed out by 'natural selection', there isn't much I can do about it :) Looking at it, I guess it must not have been your site, or you would have left your other 2 sites in there also, which is obviously some kind of self promotion.

[edit] Heated Main Page Debate

I must admit that reading your reply to my comment raised my blood pressure a rather lot. Based on the other discussions you are carrying out on this page, I see that you are quite capable of carrying on a productive debate and probably didn't intend what you said on the talk page. I would be glad to respond to what you said if you take the time to calm down and rewrite it. Please do this so that we can reach a civil conclusion to the debate. Thanks, Qoph 01:11, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Soviet Union

Whether with a reply or whatever, just reply in the normal manner. It is not appropriate for you to edit my remarks with your own commentary, something a user of your seniority and experience knows full well. Libertas

This [3] is a good point, but I don't know if making points like these are going to help calm down a user with such a simplistic good/evil view of the world. The page may be protected for months if this user is successful in turning the Soviet Union article into a political discussion forum. 172 20:16, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I freely admit that I don't really know what to do. I agree that a confronation is against WikiLove and is counterproductive, though. I am probably not the person to deal with new users like Libertas best. If you imply that some of my replies on talk were not helpful, I would probably agree. The best option for me probably would be to wait until someone else can calm down and "contain" Libertas and not interfere. :) Paranoid 20:49, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I have a suggestion: assist me in adding substance to the article that reflects the reality of the Soviet era. You don't need to "contain" me, I just want to add undisputed facts so it's a better article. And you can stop trolling my other entries too. Libertas
I was not "trolling", I was genuinely curious about your interests and editing style. Interestingly, your were quite eager to restore NPOV in several other articles, removing redundant, irrelevant and POV parts. I hope you don't mind me fixing a typo, though. :)
I would love to work together adding substance and developing the article (and Wikipedia in general), the problem is that from my point of view you were very clearly "brainwashed" by American propaganda. Don't take offence at the term, this is simply how it looks. You read a comment about US plans for Fallujah, then deny that it can have any merit based on the source, reiterate the official American party line that people of Iraq were saved from totalitarianism of Saddam and that the situation is improving. Meanwhile you ignore the factual descriptions in that article (it can be biased, but you are not saying the story was complately made up, are you?), which looks like the textbook definition of totalitarism.
Please try to understand my position. I feel (and I know some other users feel the same) that I provided a valid argument, but you dismiss it without bothering to respond to the gist of it. You don't say "this is not totalitarism because fact 1, fact 2, fact 3, while USSR was totalitarian because fact 4, fact 5, fact 6." You just repeat your claims. How can I argue with that?
If you have good imagination, please, perform a thought experiment. Actually you can just copy the text to notepad and perform it for real. Take my arguments, your replies and other comments and replace USSR with USA, USA with USSR, Stalin with Bush, Iraq with Afganistan, Fallujah with gulag, gulag with Fallujah. Reverse all arguments. Than stand on my position (after reversal of all terms you would appear to attack the USA, while I would be defending it). Consider the value of your arguments against the USA, arguments that it's a totalitarian state, etc. Just think about it, are they convincing? Are they logical and rational. Or are they just empty accusations? Because from my point it certainly looks like your claims about what USSR was are empty accusations.
I hope that you can try and understand my position better. Paranoid 00:32, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I reject totally your assertion that Stalin is morally equivalent with Bush or any of your other bogus examples. I understand your position well enough, you read articles from Marxist websites and quote them approvingly. I know your view and viewpoint. I just don't agree. Nor does the sweep of history. It has embraced freedom, markets and capitalism.
The USSR stands condemned by history as a corrupt, sinister regime with the blood of many millions on it hands. The article on USSR is riddled with Soviet nostalgia and should be revised totally. Libertas
I never said that Bush is equivalent to Stalin! I said that your argumentation is weak. If you try an experiment that I suggested, you might see how weak it is. Paranoid 10:46, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sometimes it's the only way to prove a point. What was written about Soviet Union is as valid as what was written about the United Stats. Most of what was written are exaggerations and generalities, with a few falshoods. This is not how Wikipedia articles are written - this sort of vague writing is not permitted.
As I said earlier, the problems with the text Fred Bauder inserted are simple and to me rather obvious. The text is 1) one-sided, 2) irrelevant and 3) poorly written. You can write the same sort of text implying that X is Y for any values of X and Y by cherrypicking facts, exaggerating them and inventing some, especially when it is admitted that X had several simiularities with Y at some point in time.
In my view the opinionated text added by Fred is just plain bad. There is no useful content in there that can be salvaged. In addition to that, it is clearly anti-Soviet POV.Paranoid 22:34, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
We don't agree about any of that, but what physically repels me is what would appear to be your own (pro-soviet?!?) bias. Marxism is an evil so vile it approaches, perhaps even embraces amalekitesque Satanism. What could possibly be worse than such a governance? Myself I would prefer anything, from Islamism thru Nazism thru the Anarchy of Mob Justice, no political system is quite so backwards from progress as Marxism. Example (talk · contribs) 22:46, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding characteristics of the Soviet Union

Fred, why don't you move the text you added about Soviet Union to Wikinfo, where articles expressing one of the positions are welcome? It was clearly written without the NPOV goal in mind and doesn't belong in a neutral article. Paranoid 22:36, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Please look at it again. It is not about having articles which suppress critical points of view but ensuring that all significant points of view are included. I did start Wikinfo because editing, especially in this area, on Wikipedia was difficult due to point of view editing by apologists for totalitarianism, but I have not abandoned the project as Wikipedia policies provide for provision of full information regarding a subject. It is a discouraging struggle, but I believe the integrity of Wikipedia depends on it and that in the end those who firmly insist on inclusion of all significant points of view will prevail. You will discover if you are patient enough that I will fight just as hard for full expression of viewpoints and information favorable to Communism as I do for unfavorable information. Fred Bauder 23:16, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)

You have just deleted a sentence that says the Communist Party was the only permitted party and a sentence (with 3 reputable sources) explaining that there is criticism of the USSR on the basis that it was totalitarian. Can you please change these back or explain yourself? Libertas

It's still in the article, I just moved it to the section on politics. Paranoid 00:08, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

1) That's not consistent with your edit summary and 2) I changed the Politics section anyway to the excellent Fred Bauder one and 3) it is not appropriate to move such an important explanation of the USSR from the first bunch of paragraphs. Check out the Nazi Germany page for some guidance perhaps. The neutrality of the article is clearly at stake here. Libertas

I think it's very unfortunate but I will restore the POV to the article, I have tried to be reasonable. Libertas

[edit] тота

есть такой еврейский анекдот, который оканчивается "И ты прав, Хаим". (Могу рассказать.) Пример с США можно подать под другим соусом. Слушай, я разучился печатать по-русски. Along the following lines: "Tota is a model of a state, and like any model it may fit to varying degree to any state, in oder to determine the degree of tota in it.." And here goes example with USA. But one must be very careful and do not allow evident натяжки, such as link to single party from double party rule and other шитые белыми нитками построения. Tschuss, Mikkalai 02:32, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

(Many commentators consider the post-Stalin Soviet Union as a post-totalitarian society.). Что это за понятие "post-totalitarian"??? То, что было тоталитарным при Сталине, понятно. Если после него тоталитарным оно не было, так и надо написать: "НЕ БЫЛО.Paranoid 02:59, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Answer to replacing flags

I decided to replace some of the flags beacuse they did not look very good. The were not very accurate. since I'am a vexillologist I could tell that the CIA world factbook flags did not look good. The World Flag Database images look accurate enough.

I see. But could you provide at least a brief comment on description pages for images that you upload about what was detail wrong with the old flag. Also, I am not sure why Image:Sovietflag.gif is better than commons:Image:Flag of the Soviet Union.png and I lived in Soviet Union. I realise that the second flag was drawn by a Wikipedia user, but there was considerable variation in exact details of the hammer and the sickle on real flags too. One more thing, the existing flags often have higher resolution which is better and are in PNG format, which is slightly more open than GIF, and is recommended according to Wikipedia policy. Paranoid 03:05, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I traveled to the Soviet union in the mid 80's. The flags that I saw in moscow at parades looked closer to what I uploaded. I traveled to russia in 2000 and the flags flying at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the gevernment buildings in moscow were also closer to what I up loaded. The same is true for the other flags that I changed. Just last year I traveled to south east asia and the flags on wikipedia also pose some inaccuracies in the colours and proportions. Thanks for responding!!! spasiba tavarish ( just a little russian I learned while traveling to the USSR and Russia)

[edit] Bahá'u'lláh

Paraonid, I want to know if you still have any objections to the Bahá'u'lláh article. I want to remove the disputed tag. I think the BBC article which is in the references backs up everything in the text. Furthermore, I went to the library and read the 1988 Encyclopedia Brittanica article, and nothing in the encyclopedia article is in constrast with the Wikipedia article. Especially, Martin2000's complaint that Baha'u'llah escaped and was not exiled to Baghdad is not true, based on both the BBC and Brittanica article. -- NavidAzizi 22:55, Jan 16, 2005 (UTC)

No objections now, thanks. I was concerned that both references listed were Bahai literature. Now that you checked it with at least one independent reference, that concern is alleviated. Thanks. Paranoid 08:02, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images on Commons

Hello. We have had to delete and on Commons because they were fair use. Just warning you in case they're used anywhere. Cheers, notafish }<';> 18:41, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I don't think they were fair use, IIRC they were based on some creative commons license (because they were based on CC wallpaper). I don't know where you got the idea that they were fair use. Paranoid 21:25, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)
No, they weren't fair use! They were CC. Please undelete, and next time ask the uploader BEFORE deleting. Paranoid/Talk
I did not get any "idea", they were listed by someone on commons and deleted by someone else, see [5]. *I* actually have made sure that you were kept informed of their deletion. Thank you for not being paranoid ;-). This said, unfortunately, images cannot be retrieved. I have restored the pages, so if you wish, you can re-upload the images on commons under the very same name. Sorry about the inconvenience. Cheers, notafish }<';> 22:41, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC) PS. If you could credit the actual author of the images you used, that would be great. Thanx again.
Thanks for the notification. It has occured to me that they might have been deleted by someone else, but I couldn't confirm it, as there were no traces at deletion requests or elsewhere. As usually, I assumed the worst. I don't understand how could anyone think they were fair use, despite the very obvious CC copyright tag. Anyway, I reuploaded them now. And the author of the icons themselves was me (though I don't like crediting myself). And thanks again for the notice. Paranoid 10:44, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately, they are wrongly licensed on the site you took them from. As a matter of fact, if you look closely at this, and this, you will see the references to Rizelmine an anime by Madhouse Productions and Card Captor Sakura which are anime series, and definitely *NOT* cc. The author of the wallpapers is wrongly using the Creative Commons licence for these as primary material *is* copyrighted. The pictures , I am afraid, can't stay on commons. Sorry about all the rumble. notafish }<';> 18:08, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
The question is - are the wallpapers original or do they use content from the anime series. It seems to me that while the artist did use existing characters, the images are original work (i.e. he didn't capture a frame from the anime and copy-paste the girls). This makes it entirely possible to license the wallpapers (and thus the icons) under creative commons. This isn't particularly important, since it concerned just two icons for stub templates, but I still think that the images were deleted wrongly, for reasons described above. Paranoid 18:57, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Commons does not allow for fair use images. IANAL but even if you are right, re-drawing copyrighted characters does not allow one to licence them under cc just like this. At best they are fair use (in which case you can upload them here), at worst they are still under copyright. If I am very good at drawing Mickey Mouse, I doubt Walt Disney will allow me to use *my* drawing to sell mugs or t-shirts. As it is, I am crap at drawing, so that's a problem I would never face. ;-) notafish }<';> 18:02, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Completely wrong. Redrawing copyrighted images is perfectly fine, just as retelling a copyrighted article in your own words on Wikipedia is fine. Redrawing Mickey Mouse, however, is not, but it's because he is trademarked, not copyrighted. I seriously doubt any of those anime characters are trademarked (the name of the show may be, but not the girls). So if the wallpaper artist redrew the characters himself, the image is 100% fine for the commons. Paranoid 18:40, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Post-Soviet States

A new article called "Post-Soviet States" is up for vote in "Collaboration of the Week." That means we Soviet Union buffs would, in Soviet Communist tradition, pool our resources to develop a new article detailing the contrasts and similarities the various republics faced on their respective roads to democracy. Anyway, we need 4 more votes by March 15, 2005 and your vote would be appreciated. Use this url:

[edit] Sahel drought

Hey Paranoid, happened to run into your Sahel drought stub just now. Good idea for an article! Two minor suggestions to go with the good stuff you've alread got:

1. I'd like to link History of West Africa here and also include bits in the History of Mali and History of Niger articles. Do you have any good information on how this drought played out in human terms (also, more details on affected countries/regions)? I see a death count here, but any details on famine/crop yields etc. would be useful; "afflicted" is a vague term, though I'm not sure what to replace it with.

2. Given the controversial nature of climate change debates, can we source these climate change models you refer to to specific individuals, or groups of individuals? It might help save this from reverts later.

Like I said, good stuff here... if there's anything I can do to help, let me know, --Dvyost 17:14, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the praise, Dvyost. :)
1. The link with the climate effects - BBC article - "a new study in the journal Science" circa Nov'99. The story only says "scientists from the Nasa Goddard Space Flight Centre and the University of California in Los Angeles". Might be possible to look it up.
2. link with the global dimming and pollution: Leon Rotstayn from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and his colleague Ulrike Lohmann from Canada's Dalhousie University.
I am not a specialist in climate change or African history, so I probably can't add much. This particular stub was inspired by BBC Horizon's Global Dimming documentary and half an hour of online research to understand it better. As usual, when I look something up in Wikipedia and it's not there, I try to stub it at least. Paranoid 17:45, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
I don't see how to smoothly integrate that for now, so I think I'll just cut and paste these links to the discussion page; that way if someone wants to expand/source it, they have a starting point. Thanks for getting back to me so fast! Best, --Dvyost 04:32, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Time-technology and timescapes

Hi Paranoid: You state that we can not integrate forecasts of different individuals. If Prof.Bala Subramanianof DeVry university is right with his concepts of time-technology and timescapes, which is very different from those of timescape of Gregory Benford novel 1980 and the Star Trek notions of time based on physics and our planetary systems, it would not be too long before, human perceptions would be linked and made visible as precisely as the the physical universes and the objects there-in.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Cool drop.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cool drop.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use gfdl to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use fairuse.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have tagged them, too. Note that any unsourced and untagged imaged will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. [edit] Image use

Hi, I'd like to use Image:Space elevator structural diagram.png on a poster for a class presentation. It seems you're an "author or licensor". I've watchlisted your talk page; you can reply here. --Smack (talk) 15:29, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

When using the version with my modification (and not the first version by Fredrik), it is acceptable to attribute it as "by Paranoid" or just "from Wikipedia". Furthermore, as the Original Author of this Work (meaning the last version of the image, which is being distributed), I give you my permission not to attribute the image at all (although the CC-by-sa license requires that you specify the license). [edit] Permission for Green Logistics Co. warehouse photo

April 10, 2007

Dear Paranoid:

I am preparing a manuscript for a business textbook entitled Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters, to be published by PennWell Publishing Company in 2007.

May I please have your permission to use the material described below in our book, and in any future editions, revisions, or derivative works thereof?

Material to be used:

Your picture of the Green Logistics Co. warehouse, which can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Warehouse_md17.jpg

A sourceline will appear below the artwork attributing it to you. We would need your name and the date the photo was generated for proper attribution. This will read “Courtesy of 'your name', 2004”, unless you prefer a different wording for attribution.

We would very much appreciate your response and permission at your earliest convenience. This book is moving into production this month, so your timely response would be most appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

[edit] Einstein image

Hello: are you also "User:Paranoid" on the Wikimedia Commons? If so, I'd like to request a source for where the Image:Young_Albert_Einstein.jpg originally was uploaded from. Do you recall what the source was from which it originally came? If you are not "User:Paranoid" on the Wikimedia Commons, then please let me know, and I apologize for having bothered you with this issue. Thank you. ... Kenosis 01:51, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi!
I am that user. First, the image is PD regardless of where it came from, because it was made in 1893 (you can just Albert's age on that photo and do the math - let's ignore the possibility for the moment the possibility that it's some other boy looking similar to Einstein dressed in that period's clothing, whose photo was processed to look older).
If that's not enough for Wikimedia copyright police, I can provide exact details of where this image came from. Message me if that is the case.

[edit] Igor Vishev and confirmation of permission

How are you doing with getting WP:COPYREQ processing done on this article?

I've moved it from "copyvio cases" to "poster claims permission", but it's not going to get permanently kept without a GFDL confirmation, I think. --Alvestrand 19:58, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

I visit Wikipedia rather infrequently now, so I noticed the change in status only now. Will check the page. Paranoid 12:11, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
The standard procedure is to send email from an account associated with www.imminst.org (or whatever organization holds the copyright, if that can be ascertained from the imminst.org webpage), stating that permission is granted under the GFDL. The permission statement needs to be sent to permissions-en (at) wikimedia.org. This is also detailed on WP:IOWN (a subsection of WP:CP). --Alvestrand (talk) 16:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
In this case it's a post by an individual in the forum (though the individual belongs to that organisation). What to do then? Paranoid (talk) 04:50, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
