[edit] History
The school derives its name from Sri Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak, 1856-1920. He was the most famous Indian freedom fighter who campaigned tirelessley against the British rule. His freedom slogan was 'Swaraj (freedom) is my birthright and I shall have it'. It is hoped that the generations of students that pass through the halls of this school carry this man's principles of truthfullness, fearlessness and hardwork. PTVEMS was established on 29th June 1982. The new school building was built right next to the PTV Marathi Medium School on a piece of land which had earlier housed PTV Marathi Medim's laboratories. The school has grown over the years and now has four divisions for almost each standard up from three divisions per standard which was the case earlier. Mrs. Bhide has been the Principal of the Primary section since the school's establishment. Mrs. Bijoor who was the first Principal of the secondary section was later succeeded by Mrs. Limaye. The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007.
[edit] Culture
School uniform is sky blue shirt and grey pinafore for girls and a sky blue shirt with grey shorts (up to std 8) or trousers (std 8-10) for boy. The new PT uniform that was recently introduced has drawn a mixed response from the students. PTVEMS is a cosmopolitan school, however the majority of the pupils are Hindu by religion. Important days like Teacher's Day and Tilak Punyatithi are celebrated in the school by arranging events and intra school competitions. An Annual Function is held every year in December. In the Annual Function prizes are given to meritorious students by a specially invited chief guest. A Send-Off Party for students who are passing out of the institution is also held annually. Volley Ball forms an important part of the school culture and is considered to be the most important sport. Both boys as well as girls play Volley Ball. Getting into the Volley Ball team is difficult, especially for boys as there is a lot of competition to get into the 'special six' who represent the school. School is always immensely proud of its Volley Ball team.
[edit] Extra Curricular Activities
In PTVEMS a lot of importance is given to extracurricular activities and there are various clubs in the school including - The Nature Club, The Science Club, The Consumer Club, The Literary Club, Marathi Vangmay Mandal(Marathi Literary Club) and Sanskrit Sabha (Sanskrit Literary Club). School also encourages students to participate in competitions organised by other associations like the Lions Club and the Rotary Club. Traditionally PTVEMS students have always won a huge number of prizes at Azmaish interschool competitions.Group Dance and Elocution are the two events in which PTVEMS students always excel.
[edit] Sports
PTVEMS has teams for Volley Ball & Cricket and the school participates in various competitions organised by the Mumbai School Sports Association. [edit] The House System
The secondary school strength is divided into 4 group houses namely - Kusumagraj House, J.C. Bose House, C.V. Raman House and Premchand House. Each house has its own colour-
Kusumagraj - Red
J.C. Bose - Blue
C.V. Raman - Green
Premchand - Yellow
The Head Boy and the Head Girl are in charge of the house system.
[edit] Elections
Members of each house elect their House Commander and Vice-Commander through an electoral process. Members of the houses from the ninth standard can contest these elections. However, from all the candidates who wish to contest teachers select four who are then actually allowed to contest the election. These four are usually 2 girls and 2 boys. This method which restricts the number of candidated to 2 boys and 2 girls from each house has always drawn a lot of criticism from the students who believe that every person who wants to contest the election should be allowed to do so. The candidate getting the highest number of votes is the house commander and the candidate getting the second highest number of votes is the vice-commander.
[edit] Inter House Competitions
Various interhouse competitions are held by the school. These include Project Making,Debate, Group Singing, Quiz, Group Dance, Drama etc. Group Dance and Drama are the most popular competitions. For winning each competition the house gets the points, the house with the highest points then wins the House Shield.
[edit] Student Leaders and Office-Bearers
The Head Boy and the Head Girl of the school are the student representatives and they are selected by an interviewing process, these students are from the ninth standard. House Commanders and Vice-Commanders elected by the house members are also from the ninth standard. The Commanders, Vice-Commanders, Head Boy and the Head Girl together ensure smooth working of the House System in school. The Commanders, Vice-Commanders, Head Boy and the Head Girl wear special shoulder badges. Captains of the sports teams are selected by the teachers in charge of the sport. Teachers in charge of the clubs select the club office bearers, they generally wear pin-badges. There was a slight controversy in 2006-2007 when Literary Club Office Bearers were given shoulder badges which looked similar to the badges of the Head Boy and the Head Girl.
