Parlay X

Parlay X is a set of telecommunications Web services. Parlay X is designed to enable software developers to use capabilities from the telecom network (e.g. such as location, or the ability to set up a call) in applications.
The Parlay X Web services are defined by the Parlay Group, and are also a part of the 3GPP Release 6 Specifications.
The principle behind Parlay X is that since Web services are widely used in the IT industry, they are a good basis for telecommunication service creation. There is a large number of developers and programmers who understand Web services, and there is a wide variety of development tools.
The Parlay X APIs define a set of simple-to-use, high-level, telecom-related Web services. Parlay X Version 1, published in May 2003, defines web services for Third Party Call, Network Initiated Third Party Call, Send SMS, Receive SMS, Send Message, Receive Message, Amount Charging, Volume Charging, User Status and Terminal Location
Contrast Parlay X to the more complex, but functionally richer, Parlay APIs. A typical Parlay X API operation is Send SMS() which may be mapped to a series Parlay API methods.
Parlay X Version 2 specifications were published by ETSI in March 2005. Equivalent specifications are part of 3GPP Release 6. Parlay X Version 2.1 specifications were published in December 2006.

Parlay X has been implemented by a number of telecom operators, including BT, Korea Telecom, T-Com, Mobilekom and Sprint.
