[edit] Programs

Park Village Elementary has the successful PEP program developed by the Poway Unified School District. It also invites 4-5 th graders to join the Summer Academy, and as almost all Poway Unified School District schools have:a after-school care program (ESS or Extended Student Services). Park Village is also letting a class of approximately twenty preschoolers learn in K103. A group of selected students is partaking in the First LEGO League, a lego robotics league, and another group participating in Science Field Day, a day of science events tested at Tierra del Sol Middle School in Lakeside, California. This school also lets a group of about 12 students participate in a school "news" program called "PB&J" (Penguin Broadcasting and Journalism). Park Village has also started a paper recycling program, as well as an art program named Meet the Masters, where children learn about artists and do some artwork based on that artist's style. The most recent focus artist was Frida Kahlo. Park Village sometimes also has a San Marcos writing camp in the summer. This school also has after school enrichment programs.

[edit] Awards and recognition

During the 2000-01 school year, Park Village Elementary School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education,[3] the highest award an American school can receive.[4][5] Park Village was recognized as a California Distinguished School in May, 2000.[6]

[edit] Newsworthy events

  • The School was evacuated in July 2006 when a quick-moving brush fire broke out and charred about 22 acres in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.[7]
  • Park Village is one of only a handful of schools in its Poway Unified School District to support a plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling program. The money earned from recycling is put towards technology equipment at the school and they recycled a remarkable 62,000 items.[8]

[edit] Park Village fight song and mascot

The fight song lyrics, as of 2007, are:

Oh we're so proud to be the Park Village Penguins
Together we will always be friends
And if you ask us we'll say
(clap) It's elementary!
Park Village is the only place for me!

As mentioned in the song, the mascot of Park Village is a penguin.
