It is in Kollam Parliament Constituency and Chathanoor Legislative Constituency. Paravur is one of the beautiful place in the district with its beach and its cultural heritage. Arabian Sea is the west border for Paravur. Coir, Cashew, Fishing and Bricks are the important industries. Paravur backwater is very famous for its natural beauty. Govt. of Kerala recently started some projects to explore this beauty with their Tourism Package. Paravur town is well connected by Rail and Road. It is a coastal resort town, 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. It lies on the Malabar Coast of India, fronting on the Arabian Sea.Paravur is an important fishing and coir production centre. It is situated 13 km. South of Kollam and is connected with Kollam town by road and rail. It is the birthplace of K.C. Kesava Pillai (1865-1913) and Kesava Asan (1869-1917), two leading literary men of eminence.

Paravur has the largest natural Backwater lakes (the Paravur Kayal) in South Asia. It has a number of tourist resorts, with facilities for boating, swimming and surfing. Fishing is permitted, but requires permission.

Paravur is located at 8.78° N 76.7° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 10 metres (32 feet). Paravoor, 20 kilometres from Kollam, is a narrow skirt of land stretching in between the backwaters and the sea. The famous Varkala beach is a mere 15 kilometres drive from here. As of 2001 India census[2], Paravur had a population of 38,649. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Paravur has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 77%. In Paravur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
