Parasitic technology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parasitic technology is an umbrella term that refers to any technology which adds no value to the primary technology with which it is bundled.

Digital Rights Management is an example of a parasitic technology which adds no value to the consumer who purchases a DRM-protected song over the consumer purchasing the same song protection-free. TiVo is often cited by the entertainment industry as a parasitic technology for allowing consumers to "skip" commercials, thus avoiding "paying" for the shows they are watching and so adds no value to the entertainment industry [1].
