Paramaz

Paramaz or Matteos Sarkissian (1863, Meghri - 1915, Constantinople) was an Armenian fedayee, freedom fighter and political activist.

Matteos Sarkissian studied at Gevorkian Seminary of Echmiadzin. In 1880s he taught in the schools of Nakhichevan where he introduced to the Stepan Sabah-Goulian.

As a Hunchakian activist he promotes the revolutionary ideas in the Armenian villages, in 1903 he organizes the assassination attempt of Russian governor of Caucasus Golitsin.

Paramaz was one of the organizers of self-defence troops during the Armenian-Tatar massacres of 1905-06. He participates in the 7th Conference of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party, in Constanţa, 1913 where he represent the idea of assassinating the leaders of the Ittihad ve Terraki, the organizers of Adana massacre.

But in June 15, 1915 Paramaz with 19 other his comrades were hung in the central square of Constantinople (see "The 20 Hunchakian gallows").

In 2001 the monument of Paramaz was opened in Meghri town, Armenia.
