As of 2001 India census, Paramakudi had a population of 82,239. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Paramakudi has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: Male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Paramakudi, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Paramakudi is an important Commercial center and highly populated town in the Ramanathapuram district. As far as agriculture is concerned, Cotton and Chilly(red) are the mainly cultivated crabs in the villages surrounding the town. The price of Chilly in the state is decided by the commission agents in this town. Few neibhouring villages are fertile and cultivating paddy and banana too. Most part of the town are having dry lands and the farmers are making greens and vegetables and selling them in the daily market of the town. As this place is in the border of sivaganga district, the people from there also come for survival here. Apart from agriculture, Weaving plays a major role as a profession. A caste of people Sourastras(might have come from Sourastram - Gujarat) are weaving sarees and cloths. Village people are also growing cows, cattle and goats and lead their life from them. Ramanad herd of goats are famous even in Tanjore district. Thus paramakudi could be categorized as a normal semi urban village of Tamilnadu.The nearest towns include Ilaiyangudi,ramanathapuram,sivagangai.

Paramakudi's  famous temples are Perumal Temple (Well known for Chitra festival), Meenakshi amman temple and Muthalamman Temple (Poo chorithal - adorance with flowers - vizha). Apart from these Varadharaja Perumaal (Emaneswarm), Sri Hanuman, Eswaran, Subramaniya Swami, Panchamuga Anjaneyar,Machadi karruppan, siddhi vinayagar and murugan, sathuraga nayaki amman in keelaperunkarai are also blessing the people from their own temples. Alangara Matha's church(Matha kovil),Appostalic fellowship tabernacle(AFT)Church, Pentecostal Mission, Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church(TELC- Bording), Church of South India(Protestant church) , Christian Believers Assembly (Brethren),Maranatha Church, Fr. Berkman’s Church,Roman Catholic Church - Kattu paramakudi are some churches in the place. Muslim population is also form a considerable propeortion of the population.

Historically this is not the head quarters of any king but was ruled by Pandiyas and later by the King Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram. As per the ancient epic Ramayana, Lord Rama started his battle against Ravana from Sethu Samudram (which is 45 minutes travel from here).

In the town, there is one arts college(Government) and two evening colleges(Madurai Kamaraj and Alagappa).One polytechnic college offers diploma courses. For higher studies, the students are supposed to go to other towns and districts. Two government schools and four aided schools are serving the students in getting the secondary and higher secondary education. Lots of middle and KG based schools are supported by various communities.

Cinema plays a vital role in recreating the mass. Children living near the river bank (Emaneswaram, Melachathiram, Manjalpattinam...) and also spend their evenings at the river or Children's Park . Cricket is played by the children at the Government school grounds on week ends. Chitra Festival is the unique festival here is the event of perumaal visiting vaigai river on the full moon day of the month of Chithirai (around May). On this day, Sri Sundara Raja Perumaal in the form of Kallalagar (god, who blessed the thieves) visits the river Vaigai in a golden chariat having 1000 wheels. Thousands of people from the neighbhouring villages and towns gather to welcome the lord and share their love and affection on him. This is a unique festival for the people of any caste, group and culture. This celebration will span for 10 days and starts on the day of Meenakshi Kalyanam. Meenakshi, the sister of our Lord is getting married to Lord Shiva and Permumaal pays a visit to that function. But before he arrives, the marriage is getting over and Lord return back to his pavilion with disappointment. On his way he blesses the thieves. This is the incident connected with the festival.
