As of 2001 India census[1], Parlakhemundi had a population of 42,991. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Parlakhemundi has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 61%. In Parlakhemundi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
District Administration Website The town was in Madras presidency during British rule and now about 30% of the population speaks telugu and they are of Telugu origin and on this basis this Sri.Gidugu Sitapati fought to include this town in Andhra Pradesh state but due to influence of Maharaja of Parlakimidi the town was included in Orissa state. The town is very famous for its horn articles these artists were brought by the Maharaja of Parlakimidi Sri Krishna chandra Gajapathi. Sri.Gidugu Sitapati was the man who invented a scripte to the "Savara" language a native tribe of the hilly regions of parlakimidi the eastern ghats. The Maharaja of Parlakimidi is the education patron of the town he constructed High school of boys and girls and a college which is one of the oldest college of Orissa state. The Maharaja also buil tanks for cultivation of paddy,green grams,black grams and other crops. The nearby village Gandahati is place for a beautiful water falls and the place was also famous for elephants which were killed by local people because of neglegence of forest authorities.The wild life is being consumed by the local people due to carelessness of the local forest authorities.The accommodates a 100 year old Church which was rebuilted recently in the memory of Sri.Purushottam choudhury a pioneer in Telugu Christian literature.

Parlakhemundi is also considered a learner's paradise. With its serene hills and beautiful surroundings, it offers a good learning experience to the students. Paralakhemundi is was one of the leading educational hub of Orissa during the British Raj. It's the home to one of the best colleges of Orissa, Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati College (S.K.C.G. College), which is the 2nd oldest college of Orissa.Wikimapia . The Sanskrit college of Paralakheumndi is also one of the best of its kind. Parlakhemundi is the home to following technical and management institutes.

There are several state owned Primary, Upper Primary and High schools in Paralakhemundi. The MahaRaja's Boys' High School(M.R.B.H. School) is one of the best in Orissa. The Maha Raja's Girls 'High school(M.R.G.H. School) provides basic education to most of the girls of Paralakhemundi and nearby places. Parlakhemundi has a Kendriya Vidyalaya and few small and not well known convent school. It also has a Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir .
