LIMA, Peru—Olympic team member Milaine Cloutier of Granby, Que., contributed to Canada’s two gold medals Sunday at the Pan American badminton championships winning in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The Canadians made the most trips to the podium at the championships adding three silver and four bronze to the count. The U.S., which beat Canada Wednesday in the team final, followed with three gold, two silver and bronze.

In an all-Canadian women’s doubles final, Cloutier and Helen Nichol of Burlington, Ont., defeated Charmaine Reid of Fort Erie, Ont., and Jody Patrick of Calgary 7-3, 8-6, 0-7, 1-7, 8-6. Both Canadian pairs eliminated teams from Peru in the semifinals.

In the mixed doubles final, Cloutier teamed with Keith Chan of Calgary to defeat Bob Malaythong and Elie Wu of the U.S., 7-2, 2-7, 7-3, 7-0. Kara Solmundson of Winnipeg and Mike Beres of Mount Pleasant, Ont., and William Milroy of Edmonton and Nichol lost in the semifinals and were awarded bronze medals.

Milroy and Chan lost the men’s doubles final to Kevin Han and Howard Bach of the U.S., 7-2, 7-3, 7-5 while Han won the men’s the singles crown beating Stephane Wojcikiewicz of Ottawa in the final 7-5, 7-2, 0-7, 7-5.

In women’s singles, Reid and Patrick each won bronze medals. Meluawati defeated Cindy Shi in an all American final 7-1, 7-2, 7-3. --Florentyna 19:59, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
