Panruti is located at 11.77° N 79.55° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 32 metres (104 feet).

The historical Kedilam River passes through the town.

Panruti produces cashews, jackfruit, and many vegetables. Panruti plays a major role in the cashew export business, exporting to Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, and the United States. It is also a commercial center of Cuddalore district. People from all over Cuddalore district come to Panruti for purchasing groceries and fresh vegetables.

As of 2001 India census[2], Panruti had a population of 55,400. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Panruti has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 62%. In Panruti, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Schools in Panruti include Govt Boys Higher Secondary School, Subbaraya Chettiyar Girls Higher Secondary School (Govt. aided School), Balavihar Matric. Hr Sec school, John Dewey matric higher secondary school and Seventh Day Hr. Sec school. A good number of students also go to schools at nearby Cuddalore and Neyveli.

Sri Veerattaaneswarar Temple is located in Thiruvathigai only 2 km from Panruti. This temple is an ancient and famous Shiva temple, where notable saints Thilakavathiyar, Thirunavukkarasar, and Arunagirinathar visited and wrote hymns on the Lord. Panruti has a Vishnu temple, Sara Narayana Perumal. The Thiruvaheendirapuram-Devanatha perumal temple, one of the 108 dhiyadesam, is nearby. Aroct lutheran Chruch(NEW JERSULAEM CHRUCH) is an ancient chruch in cuddalore road where missonaries came and stayed.

1.The former minister of State government of Tamilnadu under Dr. MGR's regime, Mr.Panruti Ramachandran, also known as Panruttiar, was elected to the legislative assembly from this constituency. 2. Director Thangarpachan (Director of Alagi,Pallikoodam,Onbathu roopa nootu) 3. Film personality Sneha hailed from this town.
