Pan Am Flight 816

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pan Am flight 816 ("Clipper Winged Racer") was an international flight from Auckland, New Zealand to Los Angeles, United States via Tahiti, French Polynesia, and Honolulu.[1]

On July 22, 1973, the Boeing 707 took off from Faa'a International Airport in Papeete. Thirty seconds after takeoff, the plane crashed into the ocean. The plane banked to the left, and at 300 feet, looped around, and crashed into the sea. The wreckage sank in waters off Papeete.[1] The cause was not determined, though it is believed that an instrument failure during a turn may have contributed.[1][2]

All 78 persons listed on board were killed, though reports also indicate there may have been one survivor.[2]
