[edit] Economy of India

Thank you for your edits to Economy of India. --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 11:05, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You're doing good work on the economy of India. I hope you get to finish it soon and model it on the lines of the Economy of the Republic of Ireland. I'm interested in having all the main articles on the India page upgraded to a Featured Article status. Before that, you'd need to cite all your sources on all figures you've used. (Credible websites preferred). Regards  =Nichalp= 05:56, May 10, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your message. Economy of India is a great topic and a good article, I would love to remain associated with the article.--Bhadani 1 July 2005 15:05 (UTC)

Hi. Some good work being done! Although, I was wondering if you could tell me something about your plans, that is, this temp article will be overwritten on the previous article? And when do you plan to do that?? And in that case, shouldn't we look at the possibility of merging the old text somewhere with the new, rather than just deleting it? Another minor thing: dont you think there should be an opening introductory paragraph before the contents? Also, you might want to edit Economic reforms in India.Saksham 8 July 2005 10:48 (UTC)

I see your point, but dont you think that an overview of Indian Economy would have the current status (which I think is overtly dependent on the reforms (post 1991 sense)) as a central theme? Actually, not having ever read Economics formally, I dont have the same perspective of it as you might, and I tend to think in terms of current affairs than in terms of theories. My point is: when someone visits an article referring to Indian Economy, would he not want primarily to find out how it is functioning currently? Or am I taking it too seriously? :) Saksham 8 July 2005 15:08 (UTC)

I see your point. Just added another sub-heading on WTO and wrote a couple of lines about it. Have included the one reference, but please put it where it should be. I put it with the change itself, so as to temporarily relate the two. BTW, I am an engineer. Perhaps that might explain the use of figures to make a point :) You are an economics graduate, is it? DSE? Saksham 8 July 2005 21:51 (UTC)

What is the current status on the Economy of India page? This seems to have made it to the current INCOTW, but at INCOTW there are a few links to a Talk:Economy of India/temp page. This page is a redirect to the main article now, and I am confused. As one of the voters for the Economy of India into ICOTW, I would like to contribute, but do I edit the main page directly or are you planning to set up the temp page with stubs? -- Wikirao 19:11, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

Working at a feverish pace, aren't you? Great job! One thing: Do you think the page now has more pictures than it can confortably manage? I mean, a couple of graphs can be removed and perhaps moved to a more detailed page for a particular subsection. For example, statewise distribution of corruption indices doesn't seem very suitable at the first page, although the picture would suit a page entirely on Corruption in India. Similarly, the graph about "Share of Agriculture In Gross State Domestic Product" would suit better at Agrarian economy of India. Similarly for the chart about banks. While these graphs provide good visual clarity to the thng in question, they have reduced the article itself to a margin, reducing its visual pleasantness. But the graph about poverty distribution is much too instructive. I suggest we keep that one, and rethink the others. What's your take? Saksham 07:23, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

You are right when you say that only when the article is complete can we see how to make it lok more presentable. But I dont think we should (in fact, could) employ a rule of such nature. Instead, I propose that for every image, we ask the question of its suitability on the front page, and decide whether to keep it or not. This way, we will know also whether there are new images required fr a particular section or subsection. In particular, we should aim that an image provides insight to a whole section, and not to individual subsections. Of course, these can be done once the text is completed. As of now, let's not add any new images, and let the current ones be.Saksham 09:04, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

Hey! The images in the history section look perfectly fine now. Perhaps all that was needed was to align it well. Although, it was not without reason that I had commented out one particular image. I am inclined to believe that the graph showing per-capita income in the latter half of the nineteenth century, although novel, is not very insightful. In its present form, though, it looks neat, and that's why this message finds its way into your talk page, and not the article discussion. :)

About the reference in the poverty section, I think there already is one. Almost the entire sub-article is (at least was, as far as I remember) drawn from the Econ. Survey, which has been referenced [13].

I am also sorry for that edit which was reverted. I will try to sneak it in some other time :) Saksham 01:38, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion

Do you want to keep the temorary pages or should I have them deleted / be put up for deletion? PS Nice work on the Eco. of India. Keep it up User:Nichalp/sg 18:19, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] xls

Excel format would be preferable. User:Nichalp/sg 11:20, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

Jst received and extracted it. Thanks User:Nichalp/sg 12:00, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
I can't seem to generate the same graphs as you did. I find the colours a little dull. Is it possible to brighten it slightly? (See the bright colours used in the Ashes pages). PS the image format is wrong. It should be png. Regards, User:Nichalp/sg 09:23, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hi there. Just happened to visit my user page after a long time. Thanks for the token of appreciation, although I believe I would have removed it as "misplaced in perspective", "highly POV" and "doesn't belong here" had I not liked it so much. :) Thanks. Saksham 22:06, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rupee

Hi. I need the rupee values into a neat chart: [1]. I tried to doing this but can't get the year numbers to be displayed in the x-axis. (PS Would prefer a white background) User:Nichalp/sg 07:32, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah thanks. Its great. User:Nichalp/sg 10:52, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Please hold

Please hold on to the EoI article. I'm editing it. User:Nichalp/sg

Sorry for the slightly terse comment, I was making some structural edits, and I have an older version. Once I save the page your edits may be masked. User:Nichalp/sg 14:34, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

OK I've restored the lead section changes you've made. Sorry for the edits confusion. Thanks, you may continue. User:Nichalp/sg 14:39, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

I've finished with my edits so you can go ahead. Yeah, we can feature it tomorrow. We'll have to tie up loose ends mentioned on the talk page first. User:Nichalp/sg 14:44, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images

No, none of the images are PD. Is he central to India's economy? However if its really essential, I can click an image of his statue over the weekend. PS I've tried to format the notes, but its in a complete mess now. I don't know which note corresponds to which number. User:Nichalp/sg 07:33, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

As you know some new ideas have popped in PR. I also want to add a line on India's budget. Which is the most suitable heading? User:Nichalp/sg 07:56, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
I'll do one thing. I'll write a note on the budget and post in the talk page. There are several close headings inder the govt intervention so I'll let you decide on the integration. I'll pause editing the article till you've finished the footnotes. User:Nichalp/sg 08:17, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Economy of India

Congrats on making it to FA status. User:Nichalp/sg 08:59, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

thanks
thanks
Thanks for the barnstar! A different one this time. Personally, I don't have any probs if anyone adds/corrects something on my user page, as long as its not vandalism. Maybe you can now gun for those 3 other eco-articles you wanted featured. User:Nichalp/sg 12:10, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Is this allowed?

Hi. Been a long time since I made any serious edits. Congrats on the FA status! What are you currently working on? I was looking for something to do, perhaps expand Planning Commission sometime. Anyway, I came across Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and I wondered if this was allowed. Could you just check it out? Saksham 23:26, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] TFA

I've changed the image to the stock exchange building. That book is nice, but the data is pretty old -- 1922. User:Nichalp/sg 07:48, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

I think its best you ask Raul654 to change it. I can't be too sure on the length of that page. User:Nichalp/sg 06:33, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Graphs

Do you still have the sources to the graphs of EoI? 'cause SVG images are the rage today, so was wondering if you could save as .svg ( I hear Openoffice suports them). User:Nichalp/sg 10:44, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

In win, Opera 8.0 fully supports SVG. Mozilla too I think supports them and then there's a good 'ole Adobe plugin for IE. In Wikipedia currently, the server renders svg as png files, ie till SVG becomes big on the internet. Yeah, I too have problems with SVG, my image:Nepal map.svg is all spoilt. User:Nichalp/sg 13:58, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
I use photoshop for maps. For Nepal's map, I used inkscape though. Awfully difficult draw in inkscape for a first time user. I use MS Word for simple diagrams otherwise. User:Nichalp/sg 17:08, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

I wish I could run linux properly. I cant configure my network properly. Some sites like mozilla.org open while others like wikipedia refuse to open. Some router problem its seems. I've asked at various linux forums including WP:RD, but nothing so far :( I'm a beginner to SVG, still going through the tutorials. That Nepal map was the first I ever drew with that s/w. That Nepal image has come out well, but has to be cropped: Try Shift+Ctrl+D and reduce the canvas size. 300kb is pretty large. User:Nichalp/sg 10:54, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

To Nichalp, pamri, Saksham and all other editors, congrats for the economy of India article featuring today. BTW, it seems the articles are scheduled to feature on appropriate dates. Very Nice. VivekM 00:31, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the warm response and the very useful leads. VivekM 14:20, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] added a reference

Hi Pamri, congrats for making "Economy of India" an FA. I've added the ref as reqd. by you. I inserted the reference before the statistics and guess that was the reason why it was removed. --Gurubrahma 11:03, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Not sure if I've done it properly though - the statistic is from Manmohan Singh's address - Can u just chk. if I've referenced it properly and let me know? thanks a ton -- Gurubrahma 11:14, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding Economy of India

I can give you the website where I quoted, but they seem to be updating it on a daily basis, so a check again reveals different data the next day. I've noticed I've made an error in not including NTPC in the top 5 market cap list, i've corrected it and the address where the last day's market cap is present is at [2], this too seems a dynamic page as it gets refreshed after the day's dealings. It's getting pretty volatile at nos 4,5 & 6, so these positions might change even in a fortnight etc. Hope that helped. Idleguy 04:33, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Congrats

Hey, congrats to you! I have been around, although not making many edits. I didnt know that Econ of India was going to be featured on Oct 2, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it up. Any other stuff you currently working on? Saksham 09:07, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Telugu EoI

Hi Pamri, unfortunately, I work from an office computer on which I don't have the admin privileges - so, cannot install the indic scripts and hence can't work on tewiki. --Gurubrahma 06:11, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Pamri, this is just to inform you that I'm working on the telugu stub and deliver it to you by the end of the day. Would be doing the intro part of the english wiki - pretty tough though, with terms like GDP & PPP; especially since I've been an english medium student throughout. But I am pretty sure that I can do a good job, it's in my genes (My mom is a telugu prof). Let me know if you need some other section is to be translated, as I can send the entire thing in one bunch. -- Gurubrahma 07:01, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Contradictary reports in Economy of India

in the Economy of India, after you'd added the Forbes 2000 ranking instead of marketcap, there's been some doubts. According to the forbes official site [3] from Forbes which lists the companies countrywise, it's Indian Oil and not SBI that tops the list. As per this [4], this [5] and many other indian newspapers it's ONGC that tops the list followed by SBI. It's pretty confusing since your reference does not show countrywise listing of all indian companies in order. only 2 are listed while the rest are not in the same page.

I suggest if you get a hold on ET500 or Fortune 500 (latest issue) that should be used as this confusion can be avoided. I believe that there might be some disparity in foreign valuations since some might close their financial years differently from calendar year, etc. Also a search on the leading companies in india based on asset based would put SBI at the top. As it stands there's a lot of contradictions... Idleguy 07:22, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

Did some digging & found that your refernce is for 2003, the forbes list i gave in my previous message above is for 2004, and the newspapers were indeed right. this one is for 2005 from forbes and it mentions ONGC as the topper followed by SBI. [6] and the following page would list the details. 1.ongc 2.sbi 3.indian oil 4.reliance 5.NTPC Idleguy 07:34, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
