Yes, these characters do appear at the end of the word Palestine. It may just be my browser but they currently appear at the begining of the name in the infobox. Also, what do they mean? They also appear after Palestine on the coins but I've never seen any translation or explanation.

- Amazing what you can find in Wikipedia. The answer is in Land of Israel#The Land of Israel and the State of Israel. Now we just need to sort out the letter ordering, which works fine in the main text but messes up in the infobox. I guess it's the brackets?

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. [edit] lira as the common Arabic and Hebrew name for the Palestine pound
Finding a proper reference to the above statement isn't so easy. The best is to show frontpages of newspapers published in Arabic and Hebrew at that time, but these are still copyrighted. For the time being, I have found this article in Hebrew by Haim Arlosoroff, in which he quotes prices in lirot Eretz-Yisraeliot (i.e. Palestine pounds), mils and lirot shterling (i.e. pound sterling).
